Zoey Dollaz will release the “Port Au Prince” mixtape this summer 16

Zoey Dollaz, a young MC from Florida, is releasing a new mixtape. The young rapper has been hard at work putting together his latest project. While Zoey is a newer MC, his work and dedication to his craft goes back years. His consistency and continuous work ethic has propelled his career, and placed him on a platform where he now has the ability to touch the world by making quality music.

After his hit single, “Blow A Check,” went viral, Zoey then gained the much deserved notoriety for his artistry.  While Zoey continues to make music, he hopes to have the same impact on his fans,  if not more with his latest works. While visiting New York City, Zoey caught up with, The Hype Magazine for an exclusive on his career, his music, and future endeavors.

You’re currently in New York for a short trip. What has your experience been like being in the Big Apple?

I’ve been to New York so many times, and it’s always a great experience. They take care of me here like I’m one of their own.

While you were here, I heard you met with Jay Z. What was it like meeting an individual that has not only inspired many artists, but pioneered the music industry?

Meeting  with Jay Z was a great experience. He is my favorite rapper, so it was like a dream come true to me. When we met he acknowledged me and told me to keep working hard and doing my thing. It was one of the most memorable things in my life, period.

It seems like you have a passion real passion for artistry. How long have you been making music, and why did you decide to start?

I’ve been making music since I was 12 years old and now I’m 25. It’s been over 10 years I’ve been working on my skills. I decided to start making music because it’s something that has always touched me. I have always loved making music.

Often times people of Haitian decent have parents that want them to enter a profession like medicine or law. When you made the decision to pursue a music career, what was it like telling your parents?

My mom has always been supportive. She was the first person to put me in the studio actually. She is one of my biggest fans.

Congratulations on signing with Epic Records. How did you go about meeting L.A. Reid and attaining a record deal?

Well, my brother Future was the one who put together the meeting for me to make that happen, he made my dreams come true. Meeting LA Reid was great.

You said Future is your brother. How  is it that you guys have gotten so close over the years?

Getting together with future, I’ve actually known him for about two to three years now. He’s been paying attention to me as an artist. I’ve never been a part of a team until he approached me about FreeBand Gang (FBG). He told me he wanted me to join, but only if I wanted to, and I did.

Are you working on any music with Future?

We have a few records together right now. We have at least seven or ten  records together. We haven’t released them yet. I have only two of those songs on my mixtape right now. We should be releasing more of our music in July. For right now, I just released my new single, “Couches,” which is doing the same thing, “Blow a Check” did.

Did you think that, “Blow A Check” would be such a huge record?

I didn’t know that record was going to change my life. It was like an epidemic. It went viral, and it felt good because I knew my hard work was paying off. I just hope that people keep supporting me.

Tell me a little bit about your newest mixtape.

My mixtape is called, “Port au prince.” I’m going to release it during the 4th of July weekend. It’s finalized, and I’m just putting finishing touches I was raised in Port au Prince, and that’s where the concept for the title came from.

Now that you have a lot of new music and a new mixtape, is there anywhere that you’ll be performing or any tours you’ll be involved in?

I have a few shows coming up, but I put most of the updates on my social media. But, theres a good chance I might be on the Summer 16 tour.

It seems like your career has really propelled you forward very quickly. What is it like being away from your family for such long periods at a time and adjusting to the lifestyle?

We’ve got technology that makes it a bit easier with face-time, but its hard though because I have a son that’s eight months old, but I try my best to stay in touch.

What is it that you hope to achieve in having a mainstream music career?

I just want to be able to touch the world with my music, and hear my music in movies and commercials, and do things that I haven’t be able to do.
