The Perils & Perks of being a Porn Star: Ricky Johnson

How the College Grad & Former Athlete Made a Name for Himself in Adult

Every guy wants to get into porn, but few even make it to the tryouts. In one year, Ricky Johnson (@yearofthericky) has become one of the top male talents and not only been hired by some of the biggest studios like Blacked, DarkX, BangBros, ArchAngel, New Sensations, Digital Playground, X-Art, and Evil Angel, but was also featured in Wicked Pictures’ very first all-Black title, Ethnicity. And in January, he won the AVN Award for Best Male Newcomer, in addition to the multiple AVN and XBIZ nominations for his scenes.

If You Met Ricky at a Nightclub, You’d Think He Was an Average 25-Year-Old Working for a Brokerage or PR Firm

Not only is he very handsome, but he’s also very intelligent and an athlete. He holds a college degree and could have chosen the Corporate America path…but, he didn’t. I asked him what he would be doing if he weren’t an adult star and he said he’d be in med school, training diligently for track and field, or in another country figuring out what to do with his life.

So How Does a Bright, Young Man Choose Porn as a Career?

Ricky had always been curious about the adult industry when he was younger, and it was “always at the back of his mind”. He did the research, signed with his current talent agency, OC Modeling, and dove right in.

The industry is filled with women and only a dozen male key performers work regularly in the industry. Men are paid a fraction of what the women are—porn is definitely a woman’s world. Ricky is very aware of this and chalks it up to “women being the face of porn and the public wanting to see an abundance and variety of them”. His great performances, professionalism, and being liked in the industry will keep Ricky in the adult for some time. Men tend to stay in the industry longer and work more often because there are less of them—over time, the pay does balance out, and he’s in it for the long haul.

Of Course, Being in the Spotlight Brings Unwanted Attention at Times

Lots of guys want to get into porn and think they’re going to get paid to get laid, even though it’s not how it works. Obviously, it’s not that easy or more people would be doing it. According to Ricky, “Almost every day I get someone asking me to help them get in the industry, the only thing I can tell them is to send pictures to an agency and do your research and the opportunity is there if you’re serious.”

And He’s Got Advice for Guys Who Think They’re Ready to Join the Industry

Ricky recommends they go for it, just like he did. He advises it’s not easy and “takes a very strong mentally ready person to succeed, a long with a lot of other things”. Despite the competition, he encourages guys who want to get into porn to give it a try.

Regrets…He’s Got a Few

In life, we all have regrets. I asked him, if he could do it all over again, what would he do differently. His response was he would do everything the same, because everything happens for a reason. But, there is one thing he would change. I would use my knowledge that I have learned from being in the industry to perform better in my earlier scenes,” says Johnson. He does claim to be his own worst critic. If you wonder if porn stars watch their scenes, they do. In Ricky’s case, it’s to learn how he can be an even better performer.

It’s All About the Support System

Sadly, porn has a bad stigmatism in the real world. Many performers don’t tell their family and friends, until someone “accidentally” finds out. Ricky is lucky that his entire family knows what he does and they’re very supportive. “My mother has my back with whatever I do,” says Johnson. And when he won the AVN for Best Male Newcomer, he gave the statue to his mom to say thanks. Johnson also credits his mother for inspiring him and raising him to be humbled and grounded, three things that have been critical to his successful career.

In addition to his family, Johnson has made many friends in the industry, including directors he’s worked with like MimeFreak of ArchAngel, Prince Yahshua, and tons of industry peeps who respect and enjoy having him on the set. And of course, the ladies in adult love his devilishly handsome looks, charisma, and charm. Keisha Grey, Leah Gotti, and Sara Luvv have been some of his favorites to work with. He hopes to work with Kelsi Monroe, Harlow Harrison, and Kendra Lust in the future. Sadly, his favorite performer Gianna Michaels has retired, but he was able to meet her to AVN a few months ago.

And Speaking of the AVNs

I asked Ricky how it would felt to see his name on the screen during the AVN Awards (his award was not given on stage) and how winning Best Male Newcomer will impact his career. Despite the fact he was overjoyed to see his name up there, he didn’t really expect to win. “I felt the competition was really stiff and every other candidate was just as deserving. While I’m very proud of the award, I don’t think it dictates how someone’s career in the industry will take off,” says Johnson. He hopes to gain more recognition down the road, and transition into other things like being a director.

Like Anything Else, Porn Is a Business

A lot of people have preconceived notions as to what the adult industry is really like. I asked Ricky if there was anything he wanted to set the record straight on. He brought up the fact the porn is not a bunch of orgies, and everybody is having sex with everyone. It’s actually quite professional. “People fail to realize that you go to set, do your job and go home. Everyone is respectful of each other, for the most part. You have some outliers, but that’s with any industry,” says Johnson.

Off Set, Ricky Is Like Any Other Millennial

Ricky likes to hang out with his friends, religiously works out, plays video games and as he says, “just lives life”. He’s very inquisitive and likes learning new things, so he spends a lot of time “roaming the Internet and researching things”.

As far as his musical tastes, he’s a huge fan of Hip Hop, Rap and many other genres. His favorite artists currently include Future, Drake, Childish Gambino, J. Cole, and Migos. He’s been also listening to a lot of “turn up” music.

Clothing makes the man and Ricky’s style is a huge part of his allure. He likes to keep it casual, and this dates back to his days as an athlete in school. “You never dress up to school when you have practice before and after class,” says Johnson. Most of his shoots ask for casual dress, so it’s still a way of life for him. But when it comes time to dress up, he’s always very stylish.

Ricky has a special lady in his life, but he won’t name any names or tell us if she’s in the industry or not. When asked what qualities he admires most in women, he said a great personality and sense of humor, along the ability to be carefree and spontaneous, like himself. Ricky’s not into women who are materialistic or very full of themselves, which makes sense because he’s so down to earth.

The Future Is So Bright for Ricky…We Might Need Shades

Ricky’s future goals include directing, and he hopes to be behind a camera more than in front of it in the very near future. His plans to quit performing in the next three years and bring his creativity to the table as a director.

Currently, he’s working more now than ever and with some of the companies he’s been dreaming about. He’s gone from gang bangs to being the guy that many studios are specifically asking for on set and starring in features, including the critically-acclaimed film Ethnicity from Wicked Pictures. In Ethnicity, Ricky plays Tyrell, a gangster whose sister is urging him to live a better life. Tyrell finds himself caught between the gangster life and doing something better for himself. The real question is will Tyrell make the right choice. Ethnicity also stars a huge cast of heavyweights and newcomers, including Prince Yahshua, Channel Heart, Kira Noir, Misty Stone, Osa Lovely, Yasmine De Leon, Nat Turnher, Tyler Knight, Jezabel Vassir, and many more. It’s out now, check the SFW trailer after the jump.
