Lord Badu gains new perspective in “22”

Toronto-based Christian rapper Lord Badu is set to release his first mixtape after a two-year hiatus, 22, on May 12. The album will feature 9 songs and take listeners on a journey through Lord’s life from birth to now, the age of 22. The album features an eclectic mashup of contemporary hip-hop, R&B, and afrobeats. The first single “Like Me (Confidence)” will be released on April 12 and the second single “Brickyard” will be released on April 28, leading up to the full mixtape release on May 12. All music will be available for free on Spotify, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud.

“I wanted this album to represent every side of me,” says Lord Badu, artist. “I wanted my fans to understand how I’ve lived to get to this point; to open up and really let the listeners see what makes me me.”

The mixtape’s first single, released on April 12, is called “Like Me (Confidence)” and features a heavy funk-inspired beat that would make Bruno Mars proud. Its high energy and fun lyrics play heavily on Lord Badu’s mainstream appeal. The second single, “Brickyard”, takes the audience back to Lord Badu’s roots with grit and depth, exploring his upbringing on Brickyard Way.

“It’s a really personal album for Lord,” says Shade Waheed, artist manager, Fifth Mode Management. “I’m very pleased with the output. His goal was to bring his fans into his world and let them see a bit more of his process, and that’s exactly what he did.”

Lord Badu is an artist, president of non-profit organization Sovereign Hii International Ministries (SHIM), and CEO of Lord Badu Enterprises.
