HGTV’s Sabrina Soto: Home Lighting

Do you have some untapped potential in your living space? HGTV’s interior designer Sabrina Soto joins The Hype magazine to convert that forgotten space into savings. As the housing market continues to rebound, homeowners are planning for a remodel. But where should you start first? Often forgetting about the ceiling, it can transform how you view your space. Lighting can enhance any mood! A skylight brings in a natural feel that can open up any room. Consider adding a palate of color or a sky view to your ceiling, so you can transform your space while adding value to your home.  Check out our video interview for those 2017 Home Design trends, and learn how natural light can be a part of a healthy living lifestyle.

Can you break down the untapped potential or forgotten space that many people over look?

I think most people realize that a way to add value is in the kitchen and in the bathroom, but what people forget is that “Fifth Wall,” which is your ceiling. It is the easiest way to add more visual interest to a space. You can wallpaper it, there is panting or adding skylights or exposing the beams.

Based on your design experience, what would you recommend to someone looking to make their home feel bigger without adding a square foot?

It’s about using as much natural light as you can. For instance, in my house, we have a Velux Skylight and it’s really the reason we bought this house. We walked into this space and it just had so much natural light and it was so bright and airy it made the space feel a lot bigger! People walk into our house and they think, that the room is large and it really isn’t, it’s just that there is so much natural light into one space. The sky lights are awesome! If you have really heavy draperies, I would tell you to take them down. Try to get as much natural light into a space as possible, and if you don’t have a lot of light, paint the walls a lighter color.

This year, many home owners are taking the time to invest. In a rebounding housing market, home owners are making plans for a little remodeling. What are some other home design trends in 2017?

You are still going to see a lot of white and bright spaces. Light greys, charcoals and accessories. For kitchens, Im seeing a lot of deep tones. Darker cabinets on the bottom, lighter cabinets on the top. When it comes to hardware, you’re going to see less of the rose gold and copper that you have seen. A lot in accessories in the home stores. But you are going to be seeing a lot more of black steal and dulled braces in accessories and in hardware.

What are some really interesting ways to manipulate the lighting in your home to really set an aesthetic mood?

It is about having enough artificial light. You should have at least two sources of artificial light in each room. I would highly recommend whether you have recessed cans or tables lamps, to add dimmers. During different times of weather, you are going to want a different mood in your home. Add dimmers to every light in your home, it is pretty easy to do.
