Diddy Debuts New Film ‘Can’t Stop Won’t Stop’ at Tribeca Film Festival

Continuing the 20th anniversary celebration of Bad Boy Entertainment, hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs debuted his documentary Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: The Bad Boy Story’ at Tribeca’s Film Festival in New York. The screening was held Thursday night, April 27 at the Beacon Theater.

This film chronicles Diddy’s and the Bad Boy record label’s legacy. It traces their beginnings in Brooklyn and Harlem and the record label’s rise in the mid 90s. Director Daniel Kaufman also shares an exclusive look behind the scenes of the challenges Diddy faced in orchestrating the 20th anniversary Bad Boy reunion shows in 2016 at the Barclay’s Center. Diddy had three weeks to prepare with artists including members of Total, who admitted they haven’t performed in 20 plus years.

“The Movie for me was a process of watching a whole bunch of old friends come together for a celebration of their legacy,” Kaufman said on stage before the premiere of the film.

Can’t Stop Won’t Stop featured new and old interviews, and music video snippets, of the biggest names of the Bad Boy family. This includes artists such as Lil Kim, Mary Blige, Mase, Total, Faith Evans and more as they rehearsed their performances for their hit singles. The film was also filled with rare images, videos and footage of the Bad Boy artists as young rising stars and some never seen before footage of Biggie.

“We found a treasure trove in the Bad Boy’s offices,” said Heather Perry, one of the producers of the film. “We have the young puff on camera, a young Kim and faith and stuff from Biggie, some of which has been seen before.”

The death of Christopher “Biggie” Wallace brought a sudden sadness to the film and shaped the Bad Boy Family. The documentary shared that it wasn’t until Bad Boy released Biggie’s single “Juicy” in 1994, that solidified the record label’s No. 1 spot in the music business. The film showed never before seen footage of Wallace’s funeral in Brooklyn and members of the Bad Boy family who attended crying and comforting one another. in the film, the first reunion show they celebrated in Biggie’s hometown Brooklyn, May 20 2016, a day before his 44th birthday.

The film also features brief interviews of legendary rappers Jay-z and Nas and well-known ex bosses of Diddy’s Uptown Records’ Andre Harrell and Arista’s Clive Davis. In the interview Harrell recalled Diddy ran 10 blocks in a hurry when he asked him to do an errand for him as an intern. Clive Davis recalled Diddy had the vision to start a hip-hop revolution, and the expertise to make it happen.

The documentary was put into perspective when it revealed the vulnerable side of Diddy. Kaufman and Live Nation Productions had access to his doctor visits and the audience got to see Diddy getting a B12 shot in his underwear and to see him worry and prepare his body for the shows. The audience also got to see how upset and hard on himself and others he was about the misadventures of the first night of the show. Diddy’s vulnerability throughout the film shows his love and faith in his Bad Boy Family.
