Will VR Porn Save the Adult Industry?

How technology is winning over piracy – By Special Guest Editor, Erika Icon (@TheRubPR)

Virtual Reality (VR) isn’t new to adult or the world in general, but it’s offering something new and could literally save the adult industry. Although sex toys and webcamming are still raking in the bucks, the DVD, Video on Demand (VOD) and website memberships are feeling the pain of piracy. There are less studios, fewer performers working, and profits are down for everyone. What the adult industry needed was a shot in the arm, something different that was hard to replicate and that people would actually pay for, and VR I just that.

I sat down with a VR aficionado, Daniel Peterson, who’s the Founder and CEO of VRPorn.com. Major adult studios are really getting into this new frontier and Peterson’s site features content from Naughty America, Hologirls, Hush, Wankz, and many other prominent studios with a variety of genres from teen to MILF to trans and beyond. They give you multiple options on how to view the scenes (Oculus, GearVR, Smartphone, Vive, and PlayStation VR) once you download them. Even if you’re not a fan of porn, you will be after spending some quality time on his site.

The adult industry has had many blows over the last few years from piracy to condom laws. VR is supposedly going to help save the industry. Do you agree with this and how will VR be able to accomplish that?

There is definitely money in VR porn. Virtual reality is still new enough that the producers are able to largely control the distribution of their content.

And the technology and content is improving all the time. We’re far away from a mature market. This means that if you want good VR porn, you have to pay for it. And this will be true for years.

Contrast this with standard video porn. There is already enough free content out there to last thousands of lifetimes. And the stuff produced this year is pretty similar to the stuff produced a few years ago, so there isn’t as much demand for the new content that producers are trying to sell.

However, VR porn isn’t immune to the market forces that affect standard porn. There is a race to the bottom occurring, with producers allowing more and more of their content to be released for free. Though this will always be their older content, using older virtual reality technology.

How many major adult studios are currently using VR? And, do you think everyone will be on board in the next few years?

There are currently about 20 significant adult studios producing VR content. And, this number continues to increase.

Major studios like Wankz and Naughty America have said that they have never seen a niche grow as quickly as VR. They are already making serious money from the VR content. All the big players see this, and are trying to get into the game themselves.

How has VR changed over just the last few years?

There have been huge changes over the past few years. VR was still science fiction in 2012, it basically didn’t exist outside expensive, niche use-cases. Now, in 2017, all the tech giants have major VR pushes, including Facebook, Google, Sony, etc. And there are literally millions of VR headsets out there in the hands of consumers now. The market is still very young, and there will be huge progress made in the coming years.

What are some drawbacks of VR?

Currently it’s too hard for the average consumer to get started. There are many different standards, qualities, and vr devices. Part of our mission is to simplify the process so that it’s as easy as going to a website and pressing play, regardless of your vr setup.

What is the Number 1 genre on your site?

On many other sites, they treat VR porn as a genre. So in that sense, VR porn would be our number 1 genre. But the fact is that vr is the new medium itself, it’s not a niche. For us, all the major genres that are popular on traditional porn sites are popular on ours: MILF, teens, POV, etc.

What kind of equipment do you see in the pipeline that will be coming out in the few years to film VR porn?

VR cameras are getting better and cheaper. And they will be approaching a level that is sufficient to make quality vr porn experiences at low cost. There is basically an infinite amount of standard porn video content because standard cameras are good enough that anybody can cheaply film people having sex. We will start to see a similar phenomenon in VR.

People like to film and watch amateur porn. You recently wrote a guide to creating your own Virtual Reality Porn for beginners/non pros. Despite the fact the equipment has come down in price, do you think amateurs will be able to figure out the technology and make some great content?

Just as people currently can create standard amateur content, they will be able to make that content themselves for VR. The technology will get cheaper and easier. I think that VR cameras will become very widespread, perhaps even built in to smartphones in the future.

If people want to watch VR but don’t have the equipment to do so, what headsets do you recommend?

I’d recommend getting a VR headset for your smartphone because it’s the cheapest and easiest way to virtual reality. This means GearVR if you have a Samsung Galaxy, DayDream if you have a Pixel phone, or Cardboard for almost everything else. If you want to get into high-end computer based VR, you should check out the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

I was recently a Daily Dot article about viewers complaining it’s hard to masturbate with the headset on, because your brain tells your body it’s already engaged. Do you agree with this and how can people watching deal with this issue?

There are a lot of stories that go around in the media about virtual reality porn. It’s a fun topic that always seems to get good traction. But, they’re not always based on the greatest research. I would chalk this article up to that. I’ve actually never heard anybody complain about this. I would say that having someone walk in on you when you’re oblivious with your VR headset on is a bigger concern.

With more people using VR porn, do you think people will only want to get off this way and it will make human contact sex less desired?

This is an ongoing concern as porn gets better and better. But I think people will adapt to it as usual. Further, VR allows many new possibilities which can improve real human contact. For example, couples can explore fantasies together, and they can keep in touch intimately even when far away.

At the XBIZ tradeshow in January, there was a panel on VR and webcamming. Both the models and viewers must have the equipment on both ends, since it is happening live. Many of the experts felt that the equipment was more than people wanted to spend and this would not be a way that VR grows in the future. Do you disagree or agree with this and why?

Yes, the technology is currently pretty expensive and cumbersome. But that was also the case with early video calling technology. And now, anybody can have a video call with anybody at any instant from the smartphone they carry around in their pocket. I think that vr video cam technology will improve exponentially like this.

One of the magical features of virtual reality is true telepresence. You can feel like you are anywhere, with anybody. And this can be accomplished in more ways than just webcams. The future is very exciting.
