RJ Anderson talks about what it means to make donuts

RJ Anderson is a young off-road short course racer and team owner. He has won six off-road racing championships and is now the BFGoodrich® performance team member joins The Hype magazine to talk what it takes to compete in the world of off-road racing. A master of the donut, RJ not only discusses what it takes to win but simple car upgrades to “next level” your vehicle and what’s next in off road racing. Sharing behind-the-scene insight on victory donuts, RJ races on the BFGoodrich® All-Terrain T/A® KR2. The consumer tire, the BFGoodrich® All-Terrain T/A® KO2, incorporates technology gleaned directly from years of desert racing and off-road wins on racing tires including the tire RJ uses when he races.

RJ, tell us about your style of racing and how different it is than regular racing.

So, I come from off-road racing, which I do a mostly a specific division of Short Course operating in the Lucas Oil off-road racing series where I race in a pro, It’s a 900-horsepower short course off-road trucks in an enclosed track. It’s about a one-mile track similar to like a motocross type style track but in an off-road vehicle full contact sport. It turns into a party out there on the track for sure. So, I do some other types of racing too! Like the Baja 500 x 1,000 type long endurance races. But I grew up in the dirt, so basically anything off-road racing in the in the dirt is where you can find me!

In your world, what goes into making the perfect donut?

When it comes to making the perfect donut the first step is winning! To be able to celebrate and do a donut in the first place. You have to win the race and along with winning comes the right product and running the BFGoodrich tires, I definitely have the best product under me. With BFGoodrich having the most wins in short course plus, 87 wins in Baja which is untouched by any other brand out there. So, once you get the winning part down, the rest kind of just comes natural. It’s the almost a display of emotions and so much work goes into all this stuff that uh displaying that the perfect donut is uh almost like a work art.

Tell us about the tire you race on and how the brand uses key learning’s in the dirt for consumer tires?

The tire I’m currently racing on in the Pro 2 is the BFGoodrich all-terrain KR2. It is a race tire that they build specifically for our racing needs. What’s cool about the race tire is it starts as a slick and we get to hand groove and carve all of our side by turf or by our steering grooves. What’s cool about that is there’s BFGoodrich Engineers directly working with us at the track and the technology that we put into these race tires they take back and its direct information that translate into the tires that goes into everyday use such as BFGoodrich all-terrain KO2. So, that tire actually came from what they’ve learned on our race tires narrative’ — able to develop into the perfect tire they’re using on the street and on the trail and on your own personal vehicles.

What would you say is the hardest thing about off road racing?

The most difficult thing about off-road racing is the competition. That’s where it comes back to having all the right companies and the right support and the right people around you. I’ve been able to do, at a young age and still have so much success with six off-road racing championships under my belt at just 24. So, all of the guys that I’m racing with have kids my age so I’d say it’s surrounding yourself with the right people, because the competition’s tough and that’s where it kind of comes back to tires. In Off-road racing, all four tires are touching the ground at all times and having BFGoodrich, which is the first in in so many categories for performance helps us drive us to that top spot on the box.
