Wale and J. Balvin “Colombia Heights”

Wale brings his fourth single off album Shine to life, with the visuals for “Colombia Heights (Te Llamo)” featuring J. Balvin.  The prophetic rapper teams with the reggaeton artist.  The artist J. Balvin, teased a sneak peek with the behind the scenes footage last week.  The single was produced by Don Cannon, of Philadelphia, and Atlanta transplant, with extensive production history including artist like  Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Pusha T, Dave East, and Jim Jones.  J. Balvin of Medellin, Colombia sparked reggaeton fuego, with the single 6 AM in 2014, which peaked at #2 on the Latin Billboard charts.  Last year he was rewarded with a Latin Grammy for Best  Urban Music album, Energia.  He announced a U.S. tour beginning September 14th in Fairfax, VA. “Colombia Heights” features added vocals from Edgar Machuca.

Named for the Northwest, District of Columbia neighborhood, known for its diversity, Wale infuses Latin base tempo with Spanish lyricism.  Wale’s Shine tour culminated with a homecoming, June 7th in Washington D.C. Wale Summer Tour ’17  In an interview with Billboard in May Wale stated the purpose of  the collaboration, “…Just do something different, man.  That’s what it really is all about.  I think that song has a lot of potential, too.” Despite mixed reviews, the combination of album and tour prove Summer 2017, is indefinitely “Shine Season.”  Wale’s fifth studio album debuted with song, “My PYT” a dance-friendly record.  Next up,  “Running Back,” featuring the return of Lil Wayne, created in homage to Wale’s football roots.  The following single, “Groundhog Day” was a response to emcee, J. Cole’s “False Prophets.”  The presence of no, Maybach Music Group features, hint to a mercurial independence, and perhaps stronger focus on his personal label, Every Blue Moon. EBM re-launched in 2014, and has launched artist such as Tiara Thomas and Fat Trel.  The EBM stamp includes multiple paint and visual artists.

The visuals directed by SpiffTV include gold dripped female muses with a diamond paradoxical filter.  The duo bailamos with great chemistry.  “Te llamo” or “I’ll Call You”  is an ode to women and fame.  Reggaeton is an adaptation of Spanish Rap and a perfect pairing for a club friendly single.  Wale’s growth as an artist shows, he remains a valued MC.  Yet with all the critics,  He’s Still Here Ignoring Negative Energy.
