Meet the ladies behind #IMOMSOHARD

Modern parenting is a tough job that comes with judgement from others. Sometimes it seems like an ongoing cycle of criticism that can cause moms to feel overwhelmed and insecure. According to a new survey by Yoplait called “Mom Judgment Today,” nearly one third of moms or 29 percent adjust their parenting style in public because of social emotions like embarrassment. Another 28 percent report feeling like bad mothers as a result of this judgment. These are significant numbers as 75 percent of moms indicate that they would be happier if they felt less judged.

Today mothers feel shame on so many levels and that is why The Hype magazine is reaching out to Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley of #IMOMSOHARD, a hugely successful weekly comedy web series on Facebook that has generated over 100 million video views. Their aim is to combat those feelings of shame and to unite moms across the country. Whether mom is a stay-at-home mom or works a full-time career, feelings of inadequacy are very real and effect a significant portion of the population. These daily issues are the focus of a new Yoplait campaign, which diffuses judgment through a mix of humor, confidence and empathy for all those going through the most challenging job in the world.

Ladies, when you came up with this idea for #IMomSoHard, did you ever think it would take off like this?

No, it was unexpected! We thought there was this thing missing that was like a funny take on motherhood, in terms of like just what a ridiculous situation it is — that we like to laugh about it. We thought other moms would like to laugh about it, but in the last year it’s kind of gone bananas. We did not expect that! Well we could always try to think about talking about topics that are important to us as friends, because we feel like we’re representative of so many friendships out there. Like when you’re going through a rough day or a tough time, you want to talk to your friend about it. Every time I go to Jenn, I know two things are going to happen, she’s going to listen and she’s also going to make me laugh. I like to think that I do the same thing back and then we think — wow this is something that like really is important to us, I bet this is important to other moms. If it’s something that makes you feel bad, it’s really nice to have an outlet to laugh at it.

Kristin, tell us about the tour this summer and the partnership you are involved with.

Well we’re we’ve already started our tour but we’re partnering with Yoplait, which is really exciting. We felt like there’s a perfect partnership for us because they have a new campaign called mom on, it’s just very supportive of moms and I think it shows moms in a way that hasn’t been seen enough which is who we truly are to each other which is supportive and warm. There is judgment out there, but what our experience is that moms are very supportive of each other and so with the tour and the live tour we get to go out and meet these moms and we are ready I have a night out and have a chance to laugh and party with their girlfriends and not talk about their kids for a couple of hours. Then they go home and they are like – I can do this now. It’s a bit of a refresher.

Jen, there is a new survey that was done about Moms and judgment, can you tell us a little about that, please?

That’s right! Yoplait did a study and actually found out that because of social media or on social media that moms feel this tremendous amount of judgement and it makes them less happy about the job that they’re doing and just feel less happy and or adapt their behavior if other moms are around. You’re worried about what other moms might think. I mean our kids all think we’re doing it wrong. It’s the only true thing out there. Kids have lots of notes and advice for us. But we found that in real life and we actually have a video that we just posted yesterday that is a hidden camera experiment where we think — in real life like given a chance, moms like step up and help each other — and we were 1,000 percent right. What we were surprised about is how fast, like it took no time and those moms were like — I’m on it, I’m going to help you. We were like wow like you exceeded our expectations which is great.

What would you like all moms to know this morning?

Well I think we’d like all moms to know that everybody kind of feels like they’re not doing a great job. You’re not alone in that. You’re not alone in any of it. You’re not alone when you sit in your closet and eat Ho Hos and cry yourself to sleep sometimes. People do that. It’s not a moment you’re alone yeah this gives nobody’s watching nobody not you’re not alone. It’s the only peace you get is in your closet or the bathroom. I mean all this stuff you’re either going to laugh about it or cry about it and we want you to laugh about it because it makes you feel better.
