KOTA The Friend brings heat with sophomore single ‘Like Water’

If ever a mashup of sounds could create the perfect music bed for lyrical missiles, “Like Water” is that ONE. KOTA is a new find for me but what an introduction. Staggered syncopations, refreshing visuals from the Pacific Ocean and a straight out solid Hip-Hop vibe got me all nostalgic-ish…and the list of voices from the world of Rap who can do that for me in this day-in-age, is fairly short. ~ JD

Here’s the official line on KOTA The Friend and his 2nd ever single “Like Water.”

Brooklyn‘s own KOTA the Friend released the LA-based visuals for his sophomore single “ Like Water“, co-produced by Nimbus Beats, off his upcoming sophomore project with Earmilk.  In his return from his critically acclaimed debut EP, “Palm Tree Liquor”, KOTA the Friend emerges from a year filled with failed friendships, heartbreak and reconciliation, new insecurities and one of the biggest blessings of his life.  Coming off the heels of his critically acclaimed debut single “ Lawn Chair”, MILK sings his praises saying ” KOTA has a carved out a space for himself (and, obviously, his music) that’s proving to be the birthplace of some of rap’s best in years”.

With implicit direction from Pigeons and Planes: “Don’t sleep…” KOTA the Friend  is truly standing up to being “a jack-of-all-trades, but more importantly, he possing a special talent in each pursuit”, KOTA‘s untitled sophomore EP transcends the MC‘s debut project in production and lyricism, through his growth in the last year. When asked about the inspiration, Kota mentioned,

This video is special to me.  I shot it Guerrilla style in LA in-between touring and meetings. When I wrote the song, I was starting to see how I was standing in my own way by living in the past. The pigeon represents my past distracting me from my past– no matter how far I go or good I feel when I wake up. We often overlook blessings in our lives because we’re too busy thinking about what could’ve been. Eventually, I stopped living that way and this song describes exactly how I felt in that moment, visually and sonically.”

Constantly building on the success of his single “CUSTOMS”, off his debut EP “Palm Tree Liquor”– which received glowing reviews from outlets such as, FADERPigeons and Planes, NYLON, VIBE, XXL,The SOURCE, Global Grind, Hip-Hop Wired, GENIUS, RESPECT — has critics and fans alike, agreeing with NYLON, deeming him “The coolest new indie rapper.”  This ultimately has helped KOTA to revitalize the NY scene all from his Clinton Hill stoop. Garnering over 750k streams on online, he has created an undeniable buzz for himself proving he is truly one to watch for 2017.
