The Hype Magazine Interviews Radio Personality Lex Luga

Too often, we neglect to highlight those gatekeepers of the music world who hold court from behind the 1’s and 2’s or are a conduit for new artists via the airwaves. Gold plaque winner Lex Luga of 94.3FM (Jackson, MS) is one such gatekeeper and The Hype Magazine got him to weigh in on how he works, how artists can motivate him to get involved and more.

A serial entrepreneur, Lex is CEO of SSC Marketing Group and Souf State Connected Records, Founder of the Hood Idol tour and an Industry MVP award winner.

What is the significance of your name and how did you get that name?

I got the name Lex Luga because my homies used to call me the complete package(after the wrestler Lex Luger) because I thought that I could do everything. Da Backwood Ambassador comes from me repping for every backwoods and small town.

Describe your style?

I have a strong voice and personality which I put into hosting. I’m not a DJ but a radio personality!!!

You are a pretty diverse DJ/Host, describe the music scene in your neck of the woods?

The music scene in Jackson is full of talent but also full of egos. My plan is to break barriers and make sure the world knows of the talent that exists in Mississippi!!!

How is it to work live sets with some of today’s biggest stars?

I enjoy being around successful people and having fun traveling the world.

You recently were awarded a Gold Plaque from Kermit Super Star Maker, can you tell us a little more about that situation?

I work with several major artists through Kermit “Super Star Maker” Henderson and ECMD in which my company promotes their music and works the streets, along with retail. I received a gold plaque for working the Compton Soundtrack by Dr. Dre in 2015.

Who and what are your influences?

My personal major influence was my Grandfather Willie “Buddy Boy” Smith and Master P!!! I’m also influenced by my personal goals of helping others and being successful through hard work and dedication.

What artists are you listening to right now?

Ju Ju Swag Shawty, 2 Chainz, Jeezy, Dj Khaled, and too many others to name.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

2 Chainz, Jeezy, Gotti, and most of all Jay-Z.

What would be the steps you would take as a Dj/Host to Break an artist in your area?

First, by consistently playing their music and branding their name and secondly, by connecting the song with the name along with the face. From that point it’s performing as much as possible and hitting the streets.

Is there anything you would like our readers to know?

Just know that this is a movement coming your way!! SSC tha Movement Connecting the Souf States to the World. Mississippi will be heard!!!

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!”

A lot of artist hit me up about investing in them or playing their music but are not willing to even spend their own money promoting themselves. Why would anybody put money into someone that’s not even willing to spend $50 on their career (besides recording) but will spend $200 on shoes or drugs lol. “Where they do that at?’ Sad to say EVERYWHERE!!!!
