Video: In Loving Memory of ‘The FREAKNIK’!

The Freaknik_artThe more things change, the more they stay the same! Twerking, Trap, Dirty Bass and EDM are not NEW to the music scene. At one point in recent history, the most celebrated gathering in the whole of the United States was Freaknik…a cornucopia of dope music, fly ladies and crazy dudes all in one place…Thank you Mr. Collipark, DJ Spinz and Nextakin for bringing back some wild memories!

About Mr. ColliPark, DJ Nextakin & DJ Spinz – “The Freaknik”

If you’re familiar with the Atlanta circuit, you may be familiar with the ratchet party dubbed “Freaknik”. Originating in 1982, the party reached its prime in 1993/1994 when 80,000 attendees would flock to the City of Atlanta for this annual Spring Break party. In 1996 the city was entirely caught off guard, and exits were cordoned off when 250,000 attendees showed up. The city wasn’t having it in 1997 though because of the Olympics taking place in the City and they didn’t want emergency services being impaired. And as you may remember that awful tragedy had taken place, so it’s as if the City had a crystal ball.

1996 marked the final year for this annual tradition, and Mr. ColliPark, DJ Spinz, and DJ Nextakin take a trip down memory lane in their latest release. “The Freaknik” showcases an abundance of twerking and heavy bass, both were synonymous to the festival. Everyone from Will Smith to Too $hort have had lines revolving around Freaknik, but ColliPark, Spinz, and Nextakin are one of the first to pay homage with a full offering.

Mr. ColliPark has been busy returning to his roots as a DJ, and has put out releases in the past couple of months on Steve Aoki‘s Dim Mak record label and Diplo’s Mad Decent record label. He has a big record releasing soon with the Ying Yang Twins, which they’re getting ready to shoot a visual for. DJ Spinz has been busy on the production tip, pumping out hit after hit. Some of his credits include Future “Maison Margiela”, Kid Ink‘s “Like A Hott Boy”, August Alsina’s “Porn Star” amongst others. And DJ Nextakin has been colliding both Hip-Hop and EDM for the past decade.

When these three Powerhouses collided on “The Freaknik” it was something special. Mr. ColliPark sparked the inspiration for this visual because he felt as if people forgot where the twerk sound originated from! And without further ado we head down memory lane.
