Kay Cola: “Come Too Far To Turn Back Now”

Let’s hop right into this brand new single of yours; “Soft Kisses”…Tell me about this particular track — How did it actually come about?

A talented producer/artist from the Bay by the name of Jay Ant of HBK (Gang)/The Invasion sent me the track he created specifically for me. It took me a couple of months to get the right vibe for the song, because I wanted to find the perfect melody. I went to the beach to write one day, and I started humming a melody and it fit perfectly. And then, the words just started flowing. I did the rap portion at the studio with Jon Famous.

With that being said, how would you describe and/or define the style of music that you create and perform?

The style of music I create is a vibe. I don’t define it by a genre because I incorporate all genres into my music, and I don’t try to be a genre when I’m creating a song. I just sing what I feel, and melodies that come out of me when I’m catching the vibe of a track.

Reflecting, how did you first discover your musical talent?

My dad is a recording artist, (so) I’ve been in the studio since I was wearing diapers. Everyone always told me growing up that I could sing, and I wrote my first song at 9. I think now, I’m really discovering and fully appreciating what a gift it is and how rare and spiritual it can be.

Who have been your greatest inspirations musically and why?

My dad, Hubert Laws, has been a huge influence because he is literally the best at his craft. He has shown me how much work you have to put in daily, even after the money and the fame comes, and when you really love music how much you study it and practice. James Fauntleroy has been a mentor of mine for over 15 years. He has taught me a lot about life and writing, and even taught me my first Kim Burrell vocal run. Brandy is a huge inspiration vocally, and Coldplay, John Mayer and Imogen Heap, have inspired me musically and lyrically.

What do you feel you offer the music industry that we don’t already have in other performers?

Butchers deal with meat, carvers deal with wood, musicians deal with people’s emotions. We are lacking that today in mainstream popular music. People want to feel again, and want to hear songs about real life things that are happening and things that go on in their mind that they may think no one else understands.

What do you want people to get from your music?

I want to empower people to think and do what they feel, and not be held back by how society says you should be and my music lets them know you’re not alone in how you feel.

Have you encountered any problems in getting to this point in your career?

Definitely being a female in a male driven industry, I think every woman has encountered obstacles in an already competitive industry. You have to kick the door down, let them know you’re not taking any sh*t, and drive the point that you have something to offer and won’t settle for bullsh*t.

When can we, the masses, expect some new music from you?

I’m dropping another EP in the beginning of July.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

Life is a giant classroom and we are all students…My greatest achievement so far is recognizing that and beginning my journey to improve my music. To grow spiritually within myself, and share the light and knowledge I obtain every time I pass one of life’s tests.

If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Michael Jackson because I get him…I really feel him and I know exactly what he was feeling.

If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?

I choose them all because I want to reach everyone!

One track of yours that you think defines you and why?

All of my tracks define me. I’m an assorted bag of skittles…You can’t just pick out the red one and say I’m that flavor. I’m every single song.

Is there anything I left out, or just plain forgot to mention, that you would like to point out at this given time?
