¡MursDay!: For The Love Of Hip-Hop

First things first, please introduce for me the members of ¡MursDay!…

Murs: The members of ¡Mursday! are Gio, Nonmz, Bernz, Wrekonize and Murs.

¡Mayday!: Murs, Bernz (and) Wrekonize on vocals, Gianni Ca$h on Bass/Production (and) NonMS on Percussion.

Now of course prior to this brand new musical unification between you all, Murs you had to  first become an”official” member of the Strange Music family — So, what particular string of events actually led to this inking?

Murs: I have had a long-time working relationship with Strange Music dating back to 2009, when I invited Tech to headline my Paid Dues Festival and he then invited me to open for him on his Sickology 101 Tour. From there, our friendship has grown, along with a mutual respect.

With that being said, why exactly do you feel that you gravitated more towards Strange Music in choosing this new label home?

Murs: I really dig them as humans. They are (a) group of loyal and courageous humans, who do what they say they’re going to do. And, folks who keep their word…Especially in this business is a rare breed.

Murs, what then prompted your decision to come together for a collaborative effort with ¡Mayday!, opposed to just wanting to focus on your next solo collection instead?

Murs: I wanted to ingratiate myself further with the Strange fan-base. And, I also knew that my fans would totally dig ¡Mayday! So, I said “Let’s throw a party called ¡Mursday! and invite them all!”

However, technically, why did you all even opt to do a joint album? Was there just instant undeniable chemistry from a musical perspective?

Murs: There is a definite chemistry. I was featured on ¡Mayday’s Strange Music debut album Take Me to your Leader, on a track entitled “Hardcore Bitches,” (and) fans seemed to dig it a lot. From the fans response, we felt we might have something together.

In having said all of this, conceptually what does ¡Mursday! represent both to and for you all?

Murs: ¡Mursday! is like my bachelor party, before I officially walk down the aisle with Strange by releasing my solo album. The solo album I have been working on for the past few years is a little more heavy. So, this project was (an) opportunity to ‘Turn Up’ with the homies in Miami, before I get to more serious business. As a whole, this album is us putting the fun back into mainstream Hip-Hop!
¡Mayday!: Fun Times!!!

For someone, like myself for instance, who has yet to hear the LP in its entirety — What would you tell that person can be expected from it?

Murs: They should be expecting a celebration of epic proportions. A well orchestrated good time…Like the adult version of Disney’s Electrical Parade.

¡Mayday!: An adventure in lyricism, and a nod to both production of the past, present and future.

Following this ¡Mursday!  release, are you all already planning your own/next individual efforts as well?

Murs: I personally am already working on my next solo album; Love and Rockets 2: The Declaration. And, I definitely plan to have ¡Mayday! being a huge part of it.

¡Mayday!: Definitely! A MURS album and a ¡MAYDAY! album is next up.

Longevity, what do you all attribute yours to?

Murs: Hard work, perseverance and the grace of God.

¡Mayday!: It’s really the attention to consistency. The ability to continue to adapt with the times, and offer up consistent music and product to the people.

Do any of you all have any other outside/additional future aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?

Murs: Master physics, T’ai Chi, open a university, run for president…Read more comics, play more video games and watch more wrestling…Raise kids and stay married.

¡Mayday!: I think Bernz and Wrek would like one day to direct and edit a film. I [Wrek] would like to write a book at some point.

On a more serious note, are you all happy with the current state of Hip-Hop?

Murs: Yes, I love Hip-Hop — Always have, always will! Whatever state it is in, I am happy that it is alive.

¡Mayday!: I think we all been through our personal phases, but I think at this point we are all very comfortable with where it’s at these days. The music has seen it all, and the landscape is definitely vast, so to complain about anything these days seems pretty counter productive.

To date, what has been your biggest Hip-Hop moment(s)?

Murs: Most recently, it has to be. meeting Dave Gossett and Kedar Massenburg, while having dinner with April Walker.

¡Mayday!: Doing a record with Black Thought.

Looking ahead, say five or even ten years from now, where do you all see yourselves?

Murs: Acting, reading and writing…Playing the banjo in my country music band.

¡Mayday!: Doing it bigger and better than ever! Hopefully releasing material in more mediums.

As for the immediate, what’s next for ¡Mursday!?

Murs: Touring the world and celebrating ¡Mursday! with our fans.

¡Mayday!: We’re restocking our arsenal and preparing for a Bernz solo project, while hitting the road HARD!

Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention?

¡Mayday!: Our last album Believers is in stores now.
