Jo’zzy: What Is A Dopey?

“A dopey is a word for a person that has a certain dopeness to them! Whether it’s style, personality, or just all around.” — Jo’zzy

Let’s hop right into this new single and upcoming video of yours; “Tryna Wife”…Tell me about this track in particular — How did it actually come to fruition?

Well, we had the song a year ago, recorded it in L.A.. Tim flew Wizz and myself there to work on my album. Tim loved it and went in the booth and just swagged it out like he does.

For it, of course you teamed up with both super-producer Timbaland and Ma$e, how did you even manage to make this stellar collabo happen?

Well, Tim felt like it had a good vibe so he wanted to hop on it, and then we got it to Ma$e and he heard it and loved it, so it all just kind of happened and I got blessed with it.

With that being said, how then would you describe and/or define the style of music that you create and perform?

My sound of music we call it #Twenty90sRNB. We merge futuristic sounds with yesterday’s melodies. I’m the ’90’s and Wizz Dumb is the 2K.

Reflecting, how did you first discover your musical talent?

Man, I was around 4 when I really realized I loved music. Thanks to my brother and his many tapes he had around and seeing him go to the studio and work on his music.

Who have been your greatest inspirations musically and why?

Biggest inspiration musically…I definitely have to say acts of the ’90’s. From JODECI to Total. Missy Elliott is definitely one that inspired me to want to be different.

What do you feel you offer the music industry that we don’t already have in other performers?

Another way of hearing music. My sound doesn’t fit the radio mold, and that’s cool but it feels good. I think there’s so many dope artists in the game. Some bring things that are different, and then there’s some that ride the wave of what’s “hot.” I just want to bring that good R&B swag to the people.

Have you encountered any problems in getting to this point in your career?

Hell yes! It’s not easy if you think it’s overnight…It’s not. *Laughs* But, yeah, you come across problems as much as you come around the glory of people loving your music.

What do you want people to get from your music?

Nostalgia…Want to make you feel like you’ve heard this before.

When can we, the masses, expect some new music from you?

I’m dropping a new single with my producer and partner, Wizz Dumb, (later) in September. It’s gonna be a different vibe from “Tryna Wife,” but still that #Twenty90s flavor.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement was getting the attention of one if my icons; Diddy. Him just wanting to know who I was, meant a lot and let me know that my sound is a problem.

If you could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Ahhhhhhh…I love this question! Aaliyah, of course, would have loved to write a song for her. And, I would love to do a song with Nicki Minaj. She’s our “Queen” right now in Hip Hop.

If you could play any venue in the world, which one would you choose and why?

Any venue? I would choose one of the most intimate vibes, where I can touch the people. But, always wanted to perform at SOB’s or House of Blues, just because of the history those buildings have.

One track of yours that you think defines you and why?

Hmmmmm….I think I have a song called “Involved” that’s not out yet; it will be on my next EP droppin’ around October. When you hear it, that describes me pertaining to a certain topic.

Is there anything I left out, or just plain forgot to mention, that you would like to point out at this given time?

I do have an EP FOR THOSE interested in hearing more music at: dopebyaccident.com.

Any “parting” message(s) for our readers?
