Mixtape Friday: Episode 063 – Mixed by Cornelio Octavious

Cornelio OctaviousMeet the DJ: Cornelio Octavious

What is the significance of your name and how did you get that name?

My name isn’t something you come across often, But its actually my birth name. Cornelio Octavio Joseph , just shortened it and make it “Cornelio Octavious aka DOC OCT. Plus I always admired Doc Oct’s intellect.

Describe your style?

Feel good bounce trap, with a touch of OMG.

What was the first record you start scratching and mixing on the turntables?

My hero kaytranada -AT all.

You are a pretty diverse DJ, describe the music scene in your neck of the woods?

THANKS that means a lot for you to say that, I come from ENY Brooklyn, the hood. nothing but gangsta rap, and ex convicts doing the same style. everyone for themselves environment.

Who and what are your influences?

I’m a drummer first so it would have to be Chris Dave and Benny Greg and Chris Colemen.. As far as DJs/Producers:  Kaytradamus, Boston Chery, Rilla Force, Freddie Joachim, Loaf Muzik, Adrian Daniels. My mom plays a major influence due to her dedication with everything, And  my surroundings. I hate living in the hood… Its not a place for no one, and as a human this isn’t living, this is just getting by. I’ve tasted lime light and i just want it to be consistent.

What artists are you listening to right now?

Rilla Force, Avashai Cohen, KRS., Masego, Kaytranada.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

Avashai Cohen, Masego, Rilla Force, Kaytranada, Masego, Esperanza Spalding, Snarky Puppy, Sango, and Lege Kale.

What would be the steps you would take as a DJ to break an artist in your area?

It seem what I’m doing is affective. I’m currently making instrumentals and putting them under my friends songs, that known in the underground or not. If i like your music I would remix it. Or put one of your favorite beats that everyone know they can sing to. People just wanna vibe. Give them something familiar and  piece it up with something new.

Do you prefer radio or live DJing?

Live DJing. I only exerpeinced radio DJin once…it was dope. I would like to try out more radio stations if stations decide to have me. I gotta keep putting in work though.

Is there anything you would like our readers to know?

People  should smile more. Our only security is risk, Stop fearing and go get it. We surrounded by opportunities its just how we going to approach it.  I’m not a DJ who spins main stream radio hits, remixes and feel good music.  You guys should check out my band. LOAF MUZIK, ADRIAN DANIEL AND THE STONERS, AND MY ARTIST CHELSEA REJECT. We’re one of the best coming out of Brooklyn right now. Also would like to thanks tommy boy records for first giving me the platform to show case my mixes, and The Hype Magazine FOR GIVING ME MY FRIST PRESS. I’m blessed.  You guys not only helped me but gave a platform for thousands of years could go by, and we know as a collective we left something great for millions of ears to enjoy.

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!”

IT WAS AT A TOMMY BOY SHOW.. I DJ THE WHOLE EVENT AND PLAYED DRUMS FOR MY CREW ALL AT THE SAME TIME..i never seen anyone do that.. But I made it happen..Ask Fred from TommY BoY, he knows.
