Futurebirds Release “Deadbeat Hits”

Futurebirds recently announced the forthcoming release of their album Hotel Parties. The album – a follow up to 2013’s Baba Yaga – hits stores September 25th and is the band’s first release on the Easy Sound Recording Company label. Today, Wall Street Journal Speakeasy posted an in-the-studio video teaser set to the track “Deadbeat Hits.” Songwriter Carter King says of the song, “It’s a little bit of satire about the desire to record a smash hit, get treated like gods, and start acting like assholes. I think everyone in this game wants a #1 hit and a high-five. You just would hope it’s because you wrote a truly great song that blows people away, and not the ‘Nilla Wafer ripoff of the summer. Although, we’d probably take that too in a pinch.” The video features behind the scenes video from their time recording Hotel Parties in their hometown of Athens as well as footage from recording in Richmond, VA. “With a descending figure on steel guitar and King’s hazy vocals, the twangy tune has a genial summertime feel as it scrolls by, accompanied by scenes of the musicians playing in the studio and clowning around outside,” said WSJ Speakeasy.

Previously, the band gave fans a sneak peak of the album with the track “twentyseven,” which was premiered via Stereogum. Calling attention to the prevailing theme of the album, Stereogum said “Bands often live two separate lives: their life on the road and their life at home. Athens twangers Futurebirds’ new album, aptly titled Hotel Parties, revolves around balancing these two lives, trying to keep one from destroying the other – sometimes unsuccessfully. ” Hotel Parties is now available for pre-order and will be available digitally on CD and vinyl.

The band will be touring this fall in support of Hotel Parties, kicking things off on release day in their hometown of Athens, GA at the Georgia Theater. They’ll do a full run of dates in the US, with additional dates in the South being announced today. Complete list of dates below.

Discussing Hotel Parties, Carter King adds, “We feel we’ve taken the sound a step further on this one for sure. It’s less washy and ethereal than Baba Yaga, a little more to the point, both sonically and lyrically. We stripped away a lot of the instrumental excesses and reverb that we have tended to rely on in the past. This was in service of this collection of songs, but is also is a by-product of us having more confidence in ourselves as songwriters, players, singers, etc. Brian Paulson (Slint, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt and Wilco) was also a big help in that. We felt we needed a fresh perspective on it all after tracking, so we brought him in to mix the record having not heard a lick.”
