Mixtape Friday: Episode 066 – Mixed by J57 and Deejay Element

J57 MixtapeWhat is the significance of your name and how did you get it?
The significance of my name is there are 4 Elements of Hip Hop and djing is one. (I got my name like 16 years ago, so it’s a little cliche) lol
Describe your style?
I consider myself a diverse DJ so I have different styles depending on if I’m in the club, studio, on stage with an emcee etc.
What was the first record you start scratching and mixing on the turntables?
I had doubles of “Rumpshaker” lol
You are a pretty diverse DJ, describe the music scene in your neck of the woods?
The music scene where I’m living at the moment is pretty weak, not too many hip hop shows to go to. I DJ a couple Casinos and clubs in upstate NY which are cool and the money is good but there’s nothing like going to see a good show with dope emcees and dj’s.
Who and what are your influences?
Turntablism is my major influence. So many ill dj’s I look up to but WAY too many to list.
What artists are you listening to right now?
At the moment I’m listening to a bunch of random stuff old and new. Joey Bada$$, The Weeknd, Kendrick, Dilla, Dj Snake, Dj Premiere, The Black Keys, Arcade fire, Artic Monkeys, Iron Maiden, reggae. Really random I guess haha
Who would you like to work with in the future?
I would love to work with Joey Bada$$ and The Weeknd.
What would be the steps you would take as a Dj to Break an artist in your area?
I would put them in everyone’s face where you would have no choice but to dig their music. Whehter it be radio, shows, mixtapes etc.
Do you prefer radio or live DJing?
Definitely live djing. I love to see people’s reactions to the music I play, I like to put on a show when I Dj. I like to cut, mix, bring back records, all that good stuff a turntablist does.
Is there anything you would like our readers to know?
Look out for my side project/group with J57 called K!NG H!PPO. It will be WELL worth it.
