New Music: Wake Self’s “Still Love Her” Ft. Ma Dukes

Albuquerque, New Mexico emcee Wake Self pays tribute to classic hip-hop artists and albums in a new video for “Still Love Her.” The track, which is off his upcoming album, Malala, features J Dilla’s mother Ma Dukes opening the track by telling listeners to “educate yourself/be about it.” It then fades into Wake Self twisting the titles and lyrics of revered hip-hop classics into every verse. From Common’s Resurrection and A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory to Nas’ Illmatic and Slick Rick’s The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, “Still Love Her” pens a love letter to hip-hop culture.

“I’m not one of those people who is stuck in the so called ‘Golden Era’ because I do believe great music has been, will be and is still being made,” Wake explains. “I feel a deep attachment, however, to classic hip-hop music. I feel like we as a culture need to start recognizing our heroes and teachers like other cultures and music genres do.”

Premiered by 2DopeBoyz, directed by Phillip Torres of Explore Media and animated by Josh Goble, “Still Love Her” takes a snap shot of the Golden Era and lends it a freshness with Wake’s call for a revolution.

“We shouldn’t have some of the pioneers barely able to pull a big audience,”he says. “We should have our pioneers playing coliseums like Guns-N-Roses, Black Sabbath or other older artists of different genres. I feel we need nurture our culture and give it its proper respect.”

Wake Self takes the audience on a trip down memory lane in a way that shows respects to the pioneers who paved the way, but also enlightens those who may not have such a solid grasp on the history of what makes the culture undeniably timeless.
