Who are ApolloNightLA Artist of the Week winners Day Won?

Chay (aka R.J. Sorenson) began rapping at the age of 17 as a way to express himself when dealing with his personal adversities due to decisions he made in high school. What became a hobby in the free time transformed into a pure passion and love for rap and hip hop, with inspiration grown from listening to Bone Thugs N Harmony, 2Pac, Rakim, KRS-One, Notorious B.I.G., and many others from the 90’s era. Now 24, he’s taken the time to better craft his style and flow with respect to those that share the same goal. He has created and wrote for 16 mixtapes (or Volumes), with his most recent project – One vs. Millions, Vol. 16 – being featured on SoundCloud. His debut performance was in 2014 at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach, CA.

illyEl Bicsby (aka Elgan Richardson Jr.) met Chay at a chance encounter in Del Amo mall in Torrance, CA while shopping for phone cases. The two started conversing with each other randomly, which led to them to collaborate on many projects. illyEl Bicsby is a R&B singer known for his soulful voice and pure melodies, originally hailing from Inglewood, CA. He is the son of Elgan Richardson Sr. — a former backup singer to Luther Vandross and Patti LaBelle, and clothing stylist for performers such as Ready for the World & New Edition. At 5 years old, he began singing and continued to perfect his notes throughout his youth, debuting live at the Airliner Bar in Los Angeles, CA. After his performance, he took the time to further improve on his vocals until performing with Chay at Saint Rocke in February 2015.

Together they form the duo known as Day Won, and currently have released their debut single “Hit the Ground Runnin'” (https://itun.es/i6SG7dW) on all major streaming platforms. They have also recently released their mixtape Gravity on DatPiff (http://piff.me/fb6eb38). Day Won’s next performance will be on February 4th, where they’ll be opening for Bone Thugs-n-Harmony in Long Beach, CA.

From the outside looking in, who is the group Day Won?

We are two individuals that have connected through our spiritual ideals, who help to continue the diversity in the styles of the hip hop industry. We represent a positive mentality through today’s struggles.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

Since we were young, we wanted to make a positive impact on the music world, and more specifically make an impact on the ever changing hip hop community. We have a profound love for hip hop music as it has helped us greatly through our personal obstacles in life. Before meeting each other, we grew up crafting our skills privately, learning how to be better artists from our peers and from our inspirations. Even though we knew we wanted to be apart of the industry, it was only until we met each other last year (2015) that we finally made the commitment to build our music careers and further develop on our skills to reach our full potential in our artistry.

Tell us about your current project and your ApolloNightLA “Artist of the Week” winning song.

We actually were artists of the week twice on Apollo Night LA. The first song was Hit the Ground Runnin’, which was our debut single. The song was about the adversities of being an independent artist and the hustle it takes to make your name known worldwide. The most recent song Ridaz was a track off our mixtape “gravity” (featured on datpiff), and its message was about the success we universally seek to gain no matter where we’re from or who we are while never losing sight of ourselves. Currently we’re working on our second untitled mixtape to be released in the spring, and will continue to make mixtapes leading up to our debut studio album (to be released in 2017). We’re also creating soundcloud exclusive tracks to showcase our skills in different styles of music.

For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you?

Day to Day, which happens to be our first track off our “Gravity” mixtape. It represents where we come from and the west coast flavor that we grew up in.

Last but not least, Hype wants to know…what’s your craziest “where they do that at?!” moment?

I guess our craziest moment so far happened during one of our first shows that we performed together. Both our performance cd and backup cd didn’t work properly for the dj, so we had to use our last option and bring out our laptop. We forgot to bring a charger with it, so the laptop was already on low battery when we brought it to the dj. To make matters worse, the dj was still having trouble connecting our laptop to his mixer and playing our set, and all this was happening while there was a random raffle going on during our performance time. It made us look like amateurs and we thought we lost the crowd’s attention, but luckily we killed the show and earned some fans along the way. We keep thinking that we still have way crazier moments coming our way!
