The Hype Magazine Interviews: Lupe Fuentes

Lupe Fuentes bringing you Beauty and the Beats

For all of our readers, please in your own words- introduce yourself.

Hey, My name is Lupe Fuentes and I am an House Music Artist-(DJ and Producer) based in Los Angeles, Ca. I was born in Colombia and I grew up in Madrid Spain. My style is dark, gritty and usually classified as Tech – House, but you just need to listen to understand.

If you were to describe your musical point of view, what would it be?

I am all about the underground. I gravitate towards dark beats, and rolling bass lines. Four on the floor speaks to me. I love to bring people together with my late night funky sets and to put my non-commercial sound into everything I do!

You’re in a competitive field. A female producer, DJ, and entrepreneur. How have you managed to stomp with the big dogs in this male dominated business.

In the scene I am involved in, it’s all about the music and the sound, and I like to let my music do the talking. It’s funny, because many times, people discover my music and they email me thinking I am a guy. I actually love that because I believe music should be judged by its art, not who is making it, their gender, the color of their skin, where they are from or anything. I think I get accepted by a lot of the OG’s in the house scene because I never try to be anything that I am not. I am very humble and comfortable with myself, and it reflects in my style. I have had amazing support from people like Todd Terry, Roger Sanchez, Junior Sanchez, Gorgon City, Claptone, Kerri Chandler and many other amazing artists that I respect.

You are absolutely stunning, capturing the attention of all who see you without even touching a record. How do you get past the aesthetic?

Wow, thanks for the compliment. I am really dedicated to my craft of producing and DJing, and always working super hard to improve and grow as an artist. I can’t control how other people see me, because people judge everything and seem to have an opinion about everything and everybody. I am powerless over other people and their ideas. What I can do is always do my best, and never compromise the music that I love. I put a lot of thought and detail into my art, my music and everything I do, and everything I put out there.

Of all the genres, what compels you to House music?

House music is something that runs through my veins. It is a feeling. I grew up listening to House music. In Spain, House music is a culture that has been popular for decades. It is the true lifestyle of the all night party that is really tied to the music before anything else. It lets people be free in a way that no other music really can, because it is not about one song, one artist, or one producer, it is about a vibe, that takes you away from reality.

What’s your greatest joy?

Above everything, my greatest joy is my family, my amazing husband that always has my back and my dogs, which give me nonstop laughter all day long! Through the years, I have been through a lot of *ish and a lot of ups and downs, and through all of these experiences, I have come to realize that the most important thing in life is people, and the memories you create from the relationships with those people. The lessons we learn and the people we touch.

I hear you are self-taught in a few areas. What’s your driving force to conquer everything you touch?

I am a very ambitious person. I love to learn new things and I am a very fast learner. I moved to the USA 5 years ago without knowing one single word of English. I am a very techie person and I am able to learn new programs, as long as they relate to creativity and art. Everything is possible if you put your mind to it, and you are passionate.

What’s next for Lupe?

Well, I have been working really hard all year, and I typically release at least one single a month, on different cool record labels either out of the UK, or Spain, or some right here in the US. I also launched my own label IN THE LOOP http://www.deepintheloop.com and I run it myself. I do all my own A & R and I release the best underground music that speaks to me. Some of the music is my own and some from other artists that I find.
I am always doing a bunch of cool guest mixes for different radio shows and I am even launching my own radio show soon too!

My upcoming releases usually have a preview on my soundcloud.com/lupefuentes and I have a few records dropping on one of my favorite labels Simma Black! I am always creating, whether music, photos, video etc, and we are launching a clothing line around the label also IN THE LOOP, coming soon, so stay up with the website or check http://www.lupefuentes.com for upcoming gigs.

I am a resident at Sound Nightclub in Los Angeles and I play there regularly. Most important for me is just to stay true to myself and be authentic! See you all on the dance floor!
