The Hype Magazine Interviews Toy Connor

Today The Hype Magazine has the pleasure to sit down with Toy Connor. We appreciate you Toy Connor for taking the time to chat with us.

What inspires you an artists ?

Primarily life inspires me. The news inspires me. The nonsense of social media inspires me. My forefathers music inspires me. Quotes inspire me. Intimate conversations inspire me. Even funny shit inspires me. But mostly, my own experiences inspire me whether it’s good or bad.

Can you tell us some of the process to get your music featured on the big screen and on television?

Well fortunately I’ve been blessed to work with some talented producers who met me, love what I do, and allowed me to write on projects they plan to submit for placement. So I would say that for me, it is by divine orchestration, that I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be heard by music supervisors who appreciate my musical contribution.  In regards to the process, I show up to the session, write or collab on  the record according to the specifications of the music supervisor, lay down the vocals, submit it, and hope for the best.  And btw, not all of my submission make it, so I do a number of records and see which one sticks to the wall.  But I must say they always find something they like out of the selection (by God’s Grace).

How long does it take for you to write music ?

It doesn’t take long.  It usually happens in a day. That would be melody and scratch vocals.  Because I only write when I’m inspired, it just flows out.  I never force myself to write unless I’m really feeling it.
And most times I am cause I obviously love music with me Writing, Being a vocalist, doing remixes and DJing.

When will your debut Ep be dropping and when can we expect to see the visual for “They Don’t Even Know” to be released ?

Unfortunately I don’t have the exact release date for the EP, but I can tell you that it will be in 2016.  I’m very proud of the #TDEK visuals.. The video one hunnid! It is finally complete and is ready to be circulated.  My team is currently restructuring the strategy, and will officially release it asap.

Are you still working with the Legendary Berry Gordy ?

At this time all projects I’m associated with are completed, but what does remain between projects is Mr. Gordys mentorship which has been and is priceless.  There’s a lot of value in learning from a music pioneer and legend. Mr. Gordy is a brilliant man.  Another orchestration of the big man upstairs.

What is some advice you would give the young aspiring artists out there ?

Don’t do this music thing for fame. Do it only if it’s your passion.  If it’s your passion, you will do it because you enjoy it. You will do it if no one is watching you, and if someone is watching you, they will feel your connection to your passion and it will be infectious.

Do have any plans as far as acting goes in 2016 ?

Right now I’m focused on my music, working on my 10,000 hours to become great.  But then again you never a know. Opportunities have been presented.  I am down for the right opportunity that incorporates my music though.

Is there any projects you are currently working outside of the entertainment industry ?

Not really.  You know my moms got me investing in real estate, but that’s really her thing to manage my wealth.  My focus is excelling in the music game.  With that I am currently building a recording studio on the West Coast so I can stay productive out there.  That should be complete within the next month or so.

Is there anybody that you looked up to at a younger age coming up in the entertainment industry ?

Yes of course. Bob Marley, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, you know… The Greats!  Loved Lady Saw, Patra, Shabba Ranks, Sean Paul, Shaggy, but now I pretty much always gravitate to male Hiphop R&B Artist. Probably because of my voice type and my sound isn’t quite that of a lady, even though I am one haha!

With the internet providing more avenues to get your music out to the public, do you still think it is really necessary to sign to a major recording label in today’s day in age ?

Hmmm… I think marketing dollars are still needed. Maybe not Totally locked in to the old school machine, but I believe at some point a partnership aka a proper distribution deal that actually comes with a marketing budget is needed.

Thank you again Toy Connor for taking the time to visit with us here at The Hype Magazine!
