As you see your self, who is Se’von?

Se’von is progressive yet prolific song-writer/ recording artist that believes in words like emotion, passion, and power.

What brought you to the entertainment industry and music specifically?

Well, both my mother and sister were in Gospel groups when I was a kid so the love for performing and being musical was always in me, I thought I was supposed to be a singer because they were….that proved to be an untrue. I started writing poetry a few years later with a few poems published in books, it was only a matter of time until poetry, performing, and music would have a threesome..so to speak …lol

What and/or who influenced the sound you bring today?

Me being a military child, we traveled around the world and I think that within all that traveling I got to experience a lot of different people places and sounds, I think that is the key reason why I tend to lean toward large stadium sounding recordings because that seems global to me. As far as musical influences my range is pretty robust; With everyone from Anita Baker to Chicago, to Commissioned, to Christopher Cross to the Allman Brothers…interestingly enough I very rarely listen to “rap”.

What’s happened in your career that makes you feel this is the industry for you?

I am very much at home performing…I don’t mean just the stage.. I believe life is a long performance, I don’t ever stop performing, I’m also passionate about making a difference and having that difference be hard… and lastly I get told every once in a while I’m not that bad at it.

What was the biggest obstacle in getting to your current career phase?

The toughest part for me was finding my lane …my niche if you will…especially in today’s urban culture…if your a young black man interested in music you are automatically expected to say this..or look like this..or act like this.. which none of those things were me..so my challenge became how do I be me and still be cool…I care about people being the best them..and I motivate .. so I choose to have motivation be the sound track to all my musical efforts.

What do you want people get from your music?

I want them to see that you can be educated AND be popular in urban music..I want them to see that you don’t NEED to tear down your own people to be successful in urban music.. and I want them to see that ultimately love is the backbone of everything melodic that lasts.

Tell us about your current project?

I am currently working on a body of work tentatively called “Stadium of Hearts” I have about 10 records that I like for the project as of this interview an I have 3 videos shot for it as well.

What do you feel has been your greatest life achievement so far?

Musically, I think my greatest achievement has been developing a lane that im comfortable and confident in that I think can stand up to any artist, if we are talking about milestones in my career… I recently got a placement for the VH1 show “Hit the Floor” and its an R&B song I wrote called “Braggin” (Produced by Sweatbeatz)..also a few years ago Turner Music Group and the NBA used my single “Long Road” to promote the NBA Playoffs ..so that was cool.

If you could collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?

I definitley would want to collab with Steve Perry from the original Journey band, his range is from another planet and he has one of the most unique voices I’ve ever heard.

If you had to pick one song of yours, that really explains YOU, what would it be?

Geeeez man, lol I’ve written a 300 records!!!…ummm.. it might have to be a song that’s on my “My Life Your Movie” album called “Greater” I took along time writing that record and I think it encompasses me.

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” moment…

LOL.. of the top of my head it would have to be at a show in Toronto I performed at with Jay Z, Tierra Marie (shows how long ago this was..lol) Kanye West and Young Gunz (another tell tale sign) I man jumped up on stage and looked like he was running toward Jay..but long before he got near him he was tackled and man handled it was really crazy!.. thing about it was..it was a black guy with no shirt on ???!! WE don’t do that ..lol.. as a matter of fact “Where they do that at”??!!

Thanks for having me, I appreciate the love BIG fan of the Mag!
