Maverick Music Festival Sets The Alamo On Fire

The little historic arts village of La Villita in San Antonio played host last weekend to the fourth annual Maverick Music Festival. Nestled up against the San Antonio Riverwalk and shared between two stages including the beautiful Arneson River Theater, the lineup offered a little bit of everything for everybody from DJ performances to punk, hip hop and alternative music set among a beautiful skyline and a number of boutiques, galleries, and markets.

The two-day music festival kicked off the afternoon of Friday, April 8th with a lineup that included Joe King Carrasco, Bright Light Social Hour, and The Drums, and closed Day one out with legendary New York hip hop group Public Enemy headlining the main stage.

Day two brought out a bigger crowd early as the main stage opened with punk band Fea and continued through the afternoon with Mother Falcon, The Reverend Horton Heat, Wild Child, and Octopus Project.

As the evening rolled in, Scottish hip hop act Young Fathers took the stage and captivated everyone with their dynamic stage performance and fresh, unique guttural style of intellectual hip hop.  Australian rockers The Church followed, performing their 80’s hit “Under The Milky Way” to a crowd that was as much a part of the chorus as the band itself.

The Flaming Lips took the festival to a finish with its much anticipated theatrical set; a virtual carnival of music which included rainbows with cellphones, dancing mushrooms, balloons, confetti cannons, and the much anticipated blow-up hamster ball floating atop the audience in true Wayne Coyne style. Ending the set with a David Bowie tribute, the band engaged the audience in a Flaming Lips rendition of Major Tom before the stage went dark and the confetti finally settled to the ground.
