Artist profile: Da Foundation ‘Alleyway 2 Broadway’

Da Foundation was formed in summer of 2009 and is made up of: “Mu Smoova” Mustaiin Lawrence born June 20. Nickname “Mu” thinker, militant, an quiet spoken person who, at the same time possesses a vibe which demands attention (Lion in the Room). “Mile Casso” Malcolm Lawrence born October 10, is vigorously active, approachable and a risk taker, with the mind state of a gambler, (You win some, you lose some but I ain’t trying to lose).  The duo’s different styles complement each other with massively powerful energy as they continue towards success.

“Alleyway 2 Broadway!” a good start for a better finish. Da Foundation went from open mic’s to winning showcases to headlining their own shows in a matter of months working with various booking agencies.

Realizing their foundation must be strong they focused on their surrounding areas. Performing in Greensboro, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Charlotte and Durham just to name a few. The unique style they bring to the table fed their audience(s) leaving no bitter taste as their targeted audience identifies 100% with their music.

Smoova says, “We are walking proof of this s*it.”

But that wasn’t enough. It was time to release a project, which they did, “Alleyway to Broadway.” Moneyball was produced by Dreez09 productions and Don Mega (MegaMuzik/D-Block/ BrickSquad 1017) is currently available at www.coast2coastmixtapes.com.

As Da Foundation moves up on the Hip Hop Charts with their award winning single, they are currently impacting radio on various stations such as WRSV-FM, WZFX-FM, WCCG-FM and many more, earning them #49 in the top 50 independent artist in US.

As we grow we learnsays Casso

Da Foundation released their EP entitled “MoneyNevaSleepz” this spring and they have what it takes to make a major impact on the music industry today. Nothing came easy to them, not even the units sold on the streets “hand over fist”.

Dedication, faith, strength and talent ensure Da Foundation will be successful “one way or another.”

The crew answered a few questions for The Hype Magazine so we can introduce them to you properly:

As you see yourself, who is Da Foundation?

Da Foundation, from the bottom up. The support, the solid structure from which the hustle was birthed. “The seed that sprouted & witnessed by the planter.” More or less we’re just two brother trying to make it happen in a world where the odds are stacked against you. Alleyway 2 Broadway.

What brought you to the entertainment industry and music specifically?

The beautiful art of Hip Hop. The hustle or maybe just the thrill of starting from the bottom and with determination hoping to actually make something of yourself. The entertainment industry is very lucrative so we also talking feeding families, paying debt, far from the glitz & glamour. Not to be concerned with fame. Free from the glare of debt is more of a goal. Freedom.

What was the biggest obstacle in getting to your current career phase?

You know getting our career off the ground is no small task. The biggest challenge is probably financially supporting your career to take it the heights in order to build a solid Fan Base. Which can be a challenge in itself along with networking. But the biggest, the biggest obstacle of them all is weeding out the vultures / scam artist. This is very difficult because these guys are very good at what they do. What we’ve noticed, as you break down barriers to new levels you’ll see a new level of vultures. You just have to keep a close team and communicate.

What do you want people get from your music?

We live thru music, it ignited the hustle. Thru the music we speak from our own perspective. We get Fly, we get Greedy, we get Busy. It’s Foundation. We want people to get that fulfillment, the knowledge of knowing and expecting a standard. We grind from a state of poverty so we give you our all. The people should know we took no shorts was never too big for any opportunity. So we would hope to inspire one to be great as we’re inspired to be.

Tell us about your current project?

The current projects we are pushing are, MoneyNevaSleepz and Moneyball both EP’s. MoneyNevaSleepz 7 tracks, Moneyball 10 tracks. Moneyball is a Re-release with no sampled music. Check them out @ alleyway2broadway.net

If you had to pick one song of yours, that really explains YOU, what would it be?

…….of all the records so far “In Due Time” prod. by Dreez of the Moneyball EP. This song came from a very close spot really heart felt. The song embodies what we been thru, how we feel, what we’ve been told. You get out what you put in and it will come in due time. A statement that can relate to any and everyone.
