Who is Apollo Night LA ‘Artist of the Week’ DUTCHess?

img_1727Apollo Night LA (@ApolloNightLA) artist of the week, Dutchess (@HetDUTCHess) is the daughter of a knight raised on a Dutch fortress in the middle of the Caribbean Sea known as Saba. Her love affair with music began at the tender age of 6 when she shared her vocal gift with the appreciative ears of people beyond her family and friends.

Dutchess gives us a bit of her background:

“I have performed extensively in different locations around the world. My credits include but certainly are not limited to recording with The Marshall Vente Jazz Band, being nominated for the prestigious NAACP theatre awards for best supporting actress in a drama, and singing for the queen of the Dutch Kingdom among others. I never skipped a beat, when I moved to Los Angeles I took every opportunity to perform. I have added my distinctive vocals to several productions in LA and Chicago.”

From the outside looking in, who is Dutchess?

Whao!  I love that question! Well Dutchess is a calm spirit with an undercurrent of determination. She knows what she wants however more importantly she knows that there is a bigger reason for her singing, and that is to tell her story of love in all its forms which many need to hear.

Is Dutchess your actual name?

NO, actually it isn’t my actual name is Minerva. However I wanted to create a name that reflects me and where I’m from. I decided to use a play on words. If you noticed the spelling is D-U-T-C-H-E-S-S  and not Duchess. I am Dutch and I speak Dutch as well.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

It may sound a little way out however I was born to sing and share and the music industry can use yet another authentic voice with something real to say. I still can remember as a little shy girl lining up my dolls and stuff toys to listen to my stories and hear me sing whatever song I decided to compose at that moment and believe me there were many.  I see myself as a walking oxymoron because I’m very shy, however I receive so much pleasure when I get to share life experiences -through singing- with people who want to hear.

Tell us about your current project and your ApolloNightLA “Artist of the Week” winning single Unfiltered Love.

img_1571My current project is called Journey Unfiltered. I wrote all of the songs. Some of which had a very strong voice and wouldn’t let me rest until they were written. Others just came really quickly and I had to grab whatever was available at that moment to write on so that I wouldn’t loose them (which has sadly happened before).  I’m opening up myself to the world and weaving my authentic story and life journey which is unique to me however will resonate with many because it’s unique to them as well.

The winning single Unfiltered Love from my upcoming project is song about a man (can be a woman according to the listener’s perspective) who has had his heart taken advantage of time and time again. Then here I come offering him a love that’s so unfiltered that it takes some time for him to really comprehend that it’s real. I decided to pair the lyrics with a Chicago house/world music beat with a dance hall undertone. It’ll make you dance for sure.

For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you?

mmmm….. I would definitely pick as an introduction to myself; Rose Colored Glasses. When I wrote this song I was really talking to myself and telling myself that I shouldn’t let others tell me what I should sing, look like or how I should exist. It’s an empowering song for women and turns the traditional definition of wearing “Rose Colored Glasses”  around to where it’s ok to wear them because through them you can create your reality not the one others wish for you to have.

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” moment…

There’s been a few lol! However the most recent one is this “beauty”!

I was performing this one particular song at a really nice Jazz Club, the audience was really into the music. Literally half the guys in the room moved out of their seats and stood around the stage while others sat where they could (some of them where with their women). Talk about being UNCOMFORTABLE!!! My initial response was to get through the song despite the intense stares, however my actor side kicked in and I proceeded to stare each one of them down as I sang the living life out of that song, before the end they were not giving me eye contact! LOL!!! “Where they do that at!?” hahahahahahahahaha!
