Five Questions with Kay B Brown

Coming from a place filled broken dreams and shattered beer bottles aspiring hip hop artist “Kay B” looks to overcome adversity and over ride the statistics of making it out of the “Scenic city.” Born as Kelvin L Brown Jr in 1991, The 25 year old hails from The Southside of Chattanooga , Tennessee where dreams often become nightmares due to poverty and other extreme circumstances. Brown began his journey in music at the tender age of 7 when stepfather/former road manager of SliverHawk Records Ronnie Hill gave Brown the opportunity to get his voice heard traveling from Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama to performing which resulted in opening up for Pastor Troy and rap group Goodie Mob in the late 90’s.In 2008, at the the age of 17 Brown and longtime friend JaVario Eagle formed the label “Brique garçon Forever” which is French for “BrickBoy” building a strong buzz around the city of Chattanooga which resulted in 2 label offers which both unfortunately failed due to personal matters.

Today Brown is back stronger than ever looking claim what is his , his aggressive and rugged delivery grabs your attention like nothing other as he raps about the struggles and hard times he had to endure growing up and how he plans to never let the past repeat itself for his family and also himself. Brown most definitely has a story to tell and his new EP, released August 29th, 2016, coincidentally is entitled “Story 2 Tell” follow him on Twitter @_Kelvinoway, Instagram @Kelvinoway, like him on Facebook Kay B Brown and coming soon visit him on www.KayBBrown.com .

Tell us about your current project and or single!

This summer, I released my debut EP entitled “Story 2 Tell” a 7 song, 2 interlude studio project based on my life story and my perspective on the world today. It’s overall positive but at the same time raw and uncut because I’m giving a lot of motivation on this project and still telling it how it really is where people can relate to my music. I recorded on this particular project for 8 months total, a very long journey but I’m most definitely proud of my work because I put my all into it.

The leading single off The Story 2 Tell EP is a song entitled “Understanding.” A song I recorded October 2015 and I can honestly say that’s one of the best song I’ve done so far. I touch on a lot of things going on in today’s society and how I think we can change most of our problems. The song is doing very well and most definitely opening a lot of people eyes. I have a video to it that’s just as powerful as the song. A must hear and a must watch!

Do you feel your current project is the best introduction to you as an artist?

Story 2 Tell is most definitely the best introduction for me as an upcoming artist. I gained a lot of fans and supporters from it showing me that music is my calling. When people can relate to your story it makes all the difference and put you on a whole different level. I’m thankful people are able to get the same emotion from it that I put towards making it. When I did The Understanding video that was my first time ever being in front of a camera and a lot of people gravitated to it. So I knew then I had to make Story 2 Tell a classic. If I had the chance to do it all over I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m not content because I know I could always do better but I’m happy because I can see growth.

What is the music landscape in your neck of the woods?

The landscape in my neck of the woods is quite diverse. You have a mixture of all genres and that’s what make it great. From HipHop, R&B Soul, and even Jazz. Chattanooga is a growing city with a lot of talent and I think by the light being shed on our city outsiders will recognize Chattanooga has a lot of potential and definitely a force to be reckoned with! I fall in the HipHop/Conscious category. I have a lot of substance in my music but at the same thing I can be creative with it because I actually “rap” so I can blend the 2 into 1.

What’s on your horizon for 2017?

I plan to go crazy in 2017 towards music. I plan on releasing a least 3 projects starting with my 1st studio album entitled “New Chatt City Est 1991” which I will release 1st quarter 2017. I plan on releasing a mixtape and another EP as well . More vlogs, more videos, more shows! I’m going to really establish myself as an artist so when I think about 2017 I get excited because I’m ready to put in work and get things going.

The Hype Magazine wants to know: What’s been your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?! Or “WTF?!” moment thus far in your career?

I think I have 1 of those each and every day lol. I haven’t had anything too extreme to happen just yet but I bet if you were to ask me the same questions months on down the line it will be a different story. All I can say is do the proper paperwork for your music because it’s a lot of people who don’t really want the money, just the attention. It’s crazy outchea!
