Five Questions with Lagos’ Phlow

Plow (real name Stephanie Asuai Eyime) (@Phlowetry) is a Lagos-based emcee. Influenced by veterans such as Run DMC, Nas, Nelly, Drake and her older brother. She started penning rhymes as a means of expressing herself in her late teens and ventured into recording later on.

Teaming up with local producers, she was seen as a force to be reckoned with in college where she joined a group (Jinus) and recorded a couple of demos and collaborations with other aspiring emcees. She later moved back to Lagos after completing her degree in Comp Sci and continued recording while working a 9 to 5. She then met Montreal-based producer and Str8Buttah founder Teck-Zilla via a mutual friend. The two initially planned to record one song for a now defunct project but developed a mutual working chemistry and opted to record an EP titled “Mind, Body and Phlow” which helps to showcase Phlow’s lyrical and songwriting abilities.

Phlow is a Hennessy VS Class 2015 Alumni and also performs as a freestyle artist with an improv group called DDTM.

Currently under a Production deal with Str8Buttah Productions. Phlow has released an EP “Mind, Body & Phlow,” a single “Phlowetic Justice” and a MiniEP “Asuai.” Her music has been featured on top blogs such as Hype magazine, 2dopeboyz, HipHopDX, TheSource.com, EgoTripland, Thisis50 and much more.

Tell us about your current project and or single!

My current single/project is called Asuai. Its a medley, but you could sort of call it a mini EP of four songs all pieced together in about 5 minutes. Its a really personal project actually which reflects in the name (which means “my year” in my native dialect) . This is pretty different from my usual stuff, and it pretty much describes the story of a girl falling in and out of love.

Do you feel your current project is the best introduction to you as an artist?

Well, I think my last project was a great introduction to me as an artist, and my current project shows a slightly different side. I’d say they both serve as an introduction.

What is the music landscape in your neck of the woods?

Its a mix really, but it heavily leans towards afro-pop, a mesh of dance, rap, r n b. Its pretty interesting, we’ve been able to key in almost every element of music we love and just make what we love. I personally listen to almost everything from hip hop to EDM.

What’s on your horizon for 2017?

I plan to release a lot more material, I’ve been working and growing in this craft, and my plan is for 2017 to show that

The Hype Magazine wants to know: What’s been your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?! Or “WTF?!” moment thus far in your career

This one night, I was going to a show with my friend, I’m driving, and we run into a bit of traffic, and at this point, my window was rolled down a bit. Suddenly some guy comes near my window and basically tries to Jedi mind trick me into being robbed, by him of course. He says “hit those breaks ” with a menacing look, and I say “no”…next thing he is trying to push through the window while I’m rolling up the glass and trying to drive off….and he then runs off….. It was more weird/funny than scary really. Oh, I also had a flat that same night…..good times 🙂
