0Photos: TI’s surprise performance at David “Big Papi” Ortiz’s Celebrity Golf Classic
I’m so jealous right now, not because Tip (@Tip) got to rock out for the amazing David Ortiz (@davidortiz) at his “farewell tour” joint, but the fact it was in the D.R. there’s no snow in the Dominican Republic!
Here’s the recap:
Over the weekend, the ninth annual David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic came to a close in David “Big Papi” Ortiz’s native Dominican Republic, which doubled as the Red Sox designated hitter and three-time World Series champ’s “farewell tour” retirement party. Hosted at AlSol Resorts and the Punta Espada Golf Course in Punta Cana, D.R., the four-day event grossed nearly $700,000 for the David Ortiz Children’s Fund which provides life-saving heart surgeries for children in the Dominican Republic and New England.
The highlight of the weekend was a surprise performance by GRAMMY-winning rapper Tip “T.I.” Harris who played a 40-minute set on Friday evening. Tip and Papi have long been fans of one another, and Tip had the intimate crowd of 500 people on their feet and in the best spirits while they sang along and Papi snapped selfies while smiling from ear-to-ear with TI in the background performing. Tip went through great lengths to show his support, flying into the capital of Santo Domingo and then taking a car to Punta Cana some three hours away to perform. He departed in the early hours on Saturday morning to get to his next gig in New Jersey.
The event was attended by some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment including Ortiz and his wife, Tiffany; 2016 World Series champs Dexter Fowler and Aroldis Chapman; Red Sox players Hanley Ramirez and Robby Scott; Seattle Mariners’ Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz; Orioles centerfielder Adam Jones; Blue Jays’ Marcus Storman, Josh Donaldson, Edwin Encarnación and Jose Bautista; New York Yankee CC Sabathia; retired sports legends Ray Allen, Bobby Orr, Gary Sheffield, Tim Wakefield, Warren Sapp, Barry Larkin, Roberto Clemente Jr., Andruw Jones and Brandon Siler; Olympic gold medal gymnast Aly Raisman; TV personalities Heidi Watney and Jonathan “Coach” Coachman; actors Chris Tucker, Anthony Mackie, Glynn Turman, Dascha Polanco and Kevin Chapman; comedians Lenny Clarke and Josh Wolf; and reality TV couple Paul “DJ Pauly D” DelVecchio and songstress Aubrey O’Day.
