Expedia’s vice president of Global Communications and travel expert Sarah Gavin, has exciting news for holiday travelers looking to get away for the holiday season. As winter sets in, many Americans are planning ahead for their 2017 vacations. Sarah informs The Hype magazine on where to go and how to save, describes some travel tips and tricks including the best time to book a hotel and tells us about some alternative destinations for holiday travel. Not only does she offer her expertise in travel, Sarah discusses where we should be traveling and how to get the best deals of 2017.

What should we know before we book this year?

The best thing know is that right now is a fantastic time to be a traveler! Air capacity is up about five percent which means there are more planes flying to more destinations than ever before. As a result, airlines need to fill those seats. As it turns out, that leads to great deals for consumers! Right now airfare is at an all-time low. So there are really good deals out there. Just get out there and have a great trip.

How far out do we need to book to maximize savings?

There is good news here too! We used to tell people that you need to book 60 days out to get a good deal. Right now if you compare your flight searches about 21 days out and you book on a weekend, you can save 17 percent off domestic flights and 30 percent off flights to Europe.

Is there and specific day that is best to book?

Sunday is the best day to book. We found that at Expedia we have over 80 billion flight searchers a year. So we examined them and looked at all the different trends. We found that Sunday is your best day to book and that Friday is the worst.

What were the top trending destinations for 2016 and what destinations are offering the strongest saving looking ahead to 2017?

If we look at destinations that are really hot right now, they fall into two categories. The first is exotic destinations! So places like Dubai, India or China are really popular. Mexico right now is about 25 percent less to fly to than it was a year ago. Of course places like Paris and London have really good deals, because the US dollar is so much stronger than the Euro or Pound so your money stretches when you go to destinations like that.

What is your number one piece of advice to travelers who are looking to save money travelling?

I’m totally going to cheat and give you two! The first is, book your flight and your hotel as a package. That means just bundling them together. By booking them at the exact same time, you can save on average 20 percent off or about $600. The second is a brand new program that Expedia has called “Members Only Deals” and there are 70,000 hotels that are participating in this program. If you log in while searching for hotels, you can save 10 percent off. That is one of the easiest ways to save money.
