This Apollo Night LA (@ApolloNightLA) Artist of the Week James “Sliz” Reese’s (@sliztheboss) industry story is nothing short of amazing. His career as an artist, songwriter, screenwriter, author, actor and manager has taken him literally all over the world. Sliz established himself in 2001 with his first hit “ Moveout” (featuring Naeemah Harper and produced by Dj Miz). The video for the song cracked the national video charts rising all the way to #27 in the country. His second commercial release “Fallback” also charted in the top 30 at #29.
From the outside looking in, who is Sliz?
Sliz is an anomaly in this industry. I’m an artist first and foremost but I’m also a published author, actor, songwriter and screenwriter. I’m also a son, brother, father, friend, mentor and natural born leader. Above all I’m MUSLIM and GOD fearing. That’s the main secret to my talent and my success. So yea that pretty much sums me up.
What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?
This is my gift from God. It’s natural as breathing. So I was chosen for this literally. It’s destiny plain and simple…
Tell us about your current project and your ApolloNightLA “Artist of the Week” winning single “Watchin”.
Watchin is an ode to the frauds and the sneak dissers out there. They watch you on social media but never support. They just hate from the sidelines. I wanted to put my feelings about that in a record. Once my in-house producerEl Capitan sent the dope beat the rest is history. My full project is top secret can’t speak on it just yet. But I just acted in a principal role in a movie titled “Rated Atl” that was just released independently and doing well. I also have a fiction novel titled “Blind Rage” currently available on Amazon under James Sliz Reese. I stay busy and “they” will never out hustle me.
For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you?
My single “Watchin” is an excellent introduction into the mind of Sliz. But just about anything I drop is going to hit the mark. Just depends on what demographic I’m targeting. Pain music, Club records, Relationship records. I’m very versatile and TRUST ME I bring it everytime.
Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” moment…
London on my way back to my hotel on the train. I was coming from Oxford Circus shopping and I had just did a bunch of radio with the artist I was touring with. This guy who looked harmless enough like a broker or a lawyer or something. He goes in his suit jacket in plain site and pulls out a small bag of coke (powder cocaine). This guy proceeds to take a quick toot and put the bag back in his jacket. Overseas is a whole different culture so nobody even batted an eyelid. I was totally bugged out like huh? Lol
