Cashout Calhoun Talks about Mixtape Financially Speaking 2 And His Music Career

Detroit rapper, Cashout Calhoun released his mixtape Financially Speaking 2 on March 24 on all streaming platforms. Calhoun describes this project as motivational rap.   He’s all about motivating his fans and everybody to grind. Calhoun’s main goal in his music career right now is to build his brand and make a name for himself in the industry.

Tell me a little bit about Financially Speaking 2. What was your create process like working on the mixtape?

Really just trying to motivate everybody to get on their grind and get off their ass and get up out here and get it. It’s plenty out here to get so I’m just tryna be a motivator and you know and put some motivation out here.

How would you say Financially Speaking 2 differs from your previous mixtape Ghetto Prestigious?

Ghetto Prestigious is more like you know the ghetto mixed with prestigious. Like a dude from the hood like speaking of me from the hood, but you know I like more prestigious things. And I like to think on a whole other level than from where I came from. Financially Speaking 2, I had a financially speaking 1 like six mixtapes ago, and that’s like more motivation music to get out there and get it. Ghetto Prestigious is more like this is the point of view of where I’m coming from, coming from the ghetto and things that I like now.

How long have you been making music and what inspires you create music?

Maybe like 12 years. I’ve been rapping for like 12 years and I have like 7 mixtapes so it’s been awhile you could just say that. And just like the live that I live coming from being a hustler, I use music as a different outlet to express myself as well as like a different avenue instead of hustling and being in the street I just try to switch that all the way over to being a rapper and having a different source of income and at the same time it’s a platform for me to motivate people in the streets to like get out the streets or if you are in the streets just be the best you can be at it.

What makes your music and who you are as an artist stand out from other artists in Detroit, Michigan?

I’m not really gonna say its different cause I kinda like set the tone for like the style of rap that Detroit have right now. I’m not gonna say I’m the solemnly responsible but I absolutely elevated this style into a whole different level. Now everybody in Detroit has a piece of that style I bring to the table.

Speaking of your style of rap, how do you define your music?

It’s just like motivational rap. If you listen to my music like I get a lot of feed back off my music and the first thing people say is that like I just make them want to go get it and get their shit together. That’s the feedback I really get off the music.

What’s the most difficult thing you had to endure while trying to be successful in the music Industry?

What I’ve learned because of the type of person I am, I’m kinda like to myself so you could never be that type of person in the music industry. And you definitely have to get out there, network, and rub shoulders with people and politic a lot. It’s a lot of politics involved, so it was difficult for me at first just because of the type of lifestyle I was living in the streets to even interact with people on that type of level. I learned to separate that, like rap is one thing and the streets you cant mix it. You’ll never be successful that way if you try to mix it. Rap has to become a lifestyle in order to become successful.

Speaking of what you’ve learned, how do you feel you’ve grown as an artist?

The way I think of it is like if I grow as a person then my music will grow. Because I have different experiences and I’m able to express that through my music. As much as I’ve matured my music have matured at the same time. When I first started I could only rap about this and that because that’s all I seen. Now I’ve done seen a lot of different things I could rap about that. It’s all about maturity.

Which artist(s) do you listen to for inspiration? Who are your influences?

`I just listen to music like as far as hip-hop, I listen to all type of music like R&B, I really like R&B. I really listen to like pop music. I don’t have a certain person who influence me its just music as a whole influences me to put project after project out. I really have a thing with the studio, I just like being in the studio and creating different things and just trying to be creative. I’m always trying to enhance my sound like everything about each project. I guess that’s just a normal thing in music, trying to create different styles and sounds, trying to go in different directions with the music.

Speaking of going in new directions and trying new things, are there any producers or artists you’d like to work with now or in the future?

Yeah I definitely want to work with a couple gold or platinum producers who are really in the industry making some noise. I’d love to do that at some point. When I go to pick my production I just listen and pick what’s hot to me. It really doesn’t have to be a big producer, as long as the music is hot and the beat is hot.

Do you have any upcoming shows or future projects your fans can anticipate?

Yeah what I’m working right now is called All Jokes Aside, hopefully the mixtape will be out my June, I don’t want to give no date up but hopefully it’ll be out in the next 60 days. I got a few videos coming out from Financially Speaking 2, I got ‘Motherfucka’ that would be out on World Star soon, ‘Wanna Taste”, I got a video directed by Beasy Jones ‘Straight to it’, and promoting a track off my mixtape ‘Man Nah’ and I’m working on a few more projects. Just to keep everybody updated on what I’m doing now they can follow me on Instagram its @Cashout_313 or twitter @Cashout313. And I’m coming full speed so I hope everybody can keep up with me.
