Mississippi Shocks Number 1 Seed UConn and Snaps 111 Streak in the Final Four

All great streaks come to an end at some point, but the University of Connecticut women’ basketball were just not prepared for their 111-winning streak to end Friday night. But, with a pull-up jumper by Morgan William at the buzzer did just that.

In a second half thriller that took overtime to determine the outcome for Mississippi to move on to the 2017 National Championship with a 66 to 64. This is the second number 1 seed the Lady Bulldogs in this year’s Final Four with the first being the Baylor Bears.

During the beginning of the contest, Vivians hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the first moment. When Samuelson hit an early 3-pointer, McCowan answered to retake the lead. When she left in foul trouble, Chinwe Okorie took her position and converted a 3-point play that launched a 14-0 run by the Bulldogs.

A lead that reached 16 points at one stage evaporated. Mississippi State became the first team this season to have a double-digit lead and lose it against Connecticut. But, they did not lose focus and reached the first National Championship in school history. This was bittersweet after losing to U Conn by 60 points in sweet 16 last year.

“I feel like we earned respect tonight,” said William, whose 13 points this night will be as famous as her 41 in the regional final against Baylor. “You know, people didn’t believe in us. But it didn’t faze us. We just had to go out there and play. I feel like it showed we’re better than what everybody thinks.”

This marks the first loss for UConn since November 17, 2014, against Stanford and will be the first time since 2012.
Geno Auriemma has been quoted on serval occasions this season saying that a lost will come at some point, but I think he would have it happen during the season compared to the post season.

“I’ve said this before a hundred times,” he said “We are going to lose. Could be Monday. Could be the next week. The following weekend were going to lose. It’s not if. It’s when.”

The Bulldogs will be facing fellow SEC opponent South Carolina on Sunday, which will begin at 6 p.m. ET at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas for National Champion.
