Goapele Speaks on her hiatus, new Dreamseeker EP, and more on Sway In The Morning!

“Sway’s Universe had the pleasure of chopping it up with singer-songwriter Goapele about her two-year hiatus, reconnecting with fans and her latest project Dreamseeker. ‘I’m just at a place where I’m like, it’s time to sieze the moment . . . and just really get to a feeling that’s authentic to me. The goal was really to make a project that people could really put on from start to finish.’ The 10-track EP comes after her 2014 album Strong As Glass and features Motown Grammy-nominated artist, BJ the Chicago Kid.

The Oakland native breaks down some of our favorite tracks from her new album. She also shares her thoughts on the sonic evolution of R&B from whenshe was coming up, compared to now.” – SwaysUniverse

As we celebrate Black Music Month and it’s celebration of all genres considered Black Music, Goapele’s voice encapsulates each and every aspect of the genre. From soulful strains to the raw delivery of lyrical missiles, spitting fire at the world’s injustice, she delivers vivid pictures of the detritus of a skewed justice system, and doesn’t mind lighting into the cats who fall for the industry okie doke.
In an earlier interview with The Hype Magazine discussing this her fifth project, she expressed extreme excitement about the banger “Stay” with GRAMMY nominated crooner BJ The Chicago Kid.

It’s about intestinal fortitude in relationships

Describing “Stay” she calls it an “808 ballad, it hits hard but it still has that ballad, love song feel and I wanted to do that. BJ has a great voice and just a great vibe and we’d wanted to collaborate for a while. We finally got to get in the studio together for that song…it’s kind a ‘relathionshipy’, telling a story about how do we stay together; how do we hang in there with each other.”
Big on community responsibility, Goapele understands she has a voice and a platform and feels “Why should’t I use it…” when discussing her activist side. Referring to key moments in recent history which hit home with not just her, but the world. She’s gathering power with her music and her ability to connect on a grander scale is setting the stage for her to named among the greatest resources for justice in the entertainment industry.

How does she see herself?

“I’m a woman, but I’m also a whole person who won’t be confined to any one box,” she asserts. “Nobody is just one thing. Within any race, within any genre, and within any neighborhood, there’s so much diversity. As artists and especially as women of color, we have to be proud of that. I’m coming from an honest place and expressing the different parts of myself that make me whole.”
