New Edition Announce Tour At Bet Awards Weekend

Johnny Gill also announced BET weekend that New Edition would be embarking on a tour later this year (November 2017) bringing former promoter Al Haymon out of retirement to promote the tour.

New Edition spoke at BET Weekend at Genius Talks. Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Johnny Gill, and Manager Brooke Payne were present to speak with Host Charlamagne Tha God.

Charlamagne asked Ricky Bell why he decided to speak on his drug addiction in BET’s The New Edition Story. According to Ricky Bell “Shame and embarrassment caused me to dread telling the story, but I felt that telling the story would help save someone else.”

New Edition spoke on why they decided to film their movie with BET and how it allowed them to tell their story in a more authentic way. It also allowed Manager Brooke Payne to fully participate in the creative process of the film. Working with the BET also allowed them to sit in a room for two days to tell their story and allowed them to have conversations about things that took place 20-25 years ago, not knowing that they had offended each other.

According to New Edition, the film was “Therapeutic” for the group as a whole and brought the group closer together after going through many ups and downs.

According to Johnny Gill, the group went through so much, including being told that they can’t tour, that they can’t bring an audience out, that they lost fans, etc. But Actor Eddie Murphy inspired Johnny by saying “keep turning out and you can’t be denied.” It was then when New Edition were sighted by Sean “Puffy” “Diddy” Combs.

Charlamagne Tha God also asked New Edition how social media has helped to connect New Edition to an entirely new generation. According to Ronnie DeVoe “social media brought more eyeballs to the movie” to an entirely new generation.
