Financial Report: The world’s first 3D pen

Sometimes mistakes can lead to great innovations. That is the case with the 3Doodler. Nearly approaching it’s one millionth sale, the 3Doodler came about during a mishap in a 3D printing project back in 2012. Now the 3Doodler offers an affordable and fun way to draw in the air, inspiring a new generation or artist. Today, the company offers a range of 3D printing pens and accessories for ages 8 to 80, from hobbyist to professional and is stocked nationwide. So, if you are looking for a new way to create and express yourself, check out the 3Doodler and add another medium to your stock. It is safe, fun and easy to use. That is why the CEO Max Bogue took the time to discuss with the Hype magazine some of the highlights of the 3Doodler amid a short satellite presentation and to celebrate its soon up and coming one millionth sale.

Max, what exactly is a 3D pen and how does it differ from a 3D printer?

A 3D pen is essentially the extrusion mechanism from a 3D printer. So, you feed material in the back, it heats it up, and it extrudes it out of the front. It allows you to make physical objects but without having to use a computer or learn any software, you simply draw in the air, then you’re able to create physical objects. This is the 3Doodler create, it’s our main line pen and you know you can make really useful objects as well. So, you know this Eiffel Tower that you see here was made using that pen. It’s made in flat sectional pieces and then all the pieces are joined together using the 3Doodler create. We also have a kid’s version. The 3Doodler start.

This operates at a lower temperature so this is more appropriate for ages six plus and it uses a biodegradable plastic and you’re able to actually draw on your skin. If you want, you can touch and manipulate the material to shape it how you want to shape it. Then finally we actually have a 3Doodler Pro, which is our professional offering where you can set the temperature and speed and then the material library that’s available for the pros. So, you can do bronze, copper, nylon, ABS and PLA which is a corn starch based plastic and then finally wood which is always very fun. So, you can actually fill in cracks in your floorboards sand it down and then stain it or chips in your banister. You can even fake wood grain and things of that nature.

You are about to celebrate your one millionth sale – did you ever think that one mistake would take you in this direction?

No, when we first came up with the concept of the 3Doodler, you know we were working on a robotic dinosaur using a 3D printer, and the 3D printer made a mistake as I quite often do and we had two perfectly good pieces and my business partner Peter said, “oh man I wish you could just take the nozzle head off of the 3D printer and then use that to fill in missing gap.” That’s when we kind of slapped our heads and went — wait a minute, why can’t we do that. So, we got about two creating pieces using the 3D printer and then took the 3D printer apart and put it all together and wrote 3Doodler on the side and then used that to fix the robotic dinosaur leg and then realized, “oh we can do a million things with this, you know we can draw in the air we can draw a flat object and then put them together, we can make almost anything and people can make almost anything.” I mean the dress behind me was made using the 3Doodler create in our flexi plastic. That was made by an Australian artist who makes dresses with the 3Doodler create.

What are you working on today?

I’m working on a little bridge that I was making here and just having some fun drawing in the air.

 What’s next for 3Doodler?

So, we’re very excited about our robotics kit for the 3Doodler start, as well as, a product design kit which help kids make useful items and useful products and the robotics kit helps you make walking robots. We also just announced our license with Star Trek’s so you can make your own Starship Enterprise phasers or visor or mask. We also have some project kits we’re really excited about like the Farnsworth house and the following waters house as well.
