Five Questions With DAP The Contract

Back Story

As seen through working with Mark Ronson thanks to a collaboration with Noisey and Converse Rubber Tracks, DAP The Contract is an artist with incredible potential and his drive to inspire is unparalleled. With an Ivy League education and an awareness of the world around him, DAP is set on making a difference with his art.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, and coming from an entirely musical family, DAP started playing the piano at the age of 4, passed his ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with distinction at 13, and went onto attain a DipABRSM Performance Diploma on the Piano at 17. After high school in London, U.K., he attended the Berklee College of Music for two semesters as part of a gap year, with the intention of majoring in Contemporary Writing & Production or Music Production & Engineering. On his departure after the summer, DAP released a mixtape titled GoodBye For Now. He recorded at the renowned Abbey Road Studios in London with Grammy award winningUptown Funk” producer Mark Ronson after being selected for a competition produced by Converse in the fall of 2015. DAP went on to graduate from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island with a BA in Classics (Latin & Greek) and Computer Music & Multimedia. Although he is a relative newcomer to the music industry, he fully intends on making his mark in a major way.

The Hype Magazine got DAP to weigh in on a few things

As you see yourself, who is DAP The Contract?

DAP The Contract is a source of positive energy in the world, a bright light, but with a self-awareness that makes him relatable to any circle of people to which he so desires.

Tell us about your current project

The Two Roads EP is a taste of my perspective as an artist and a person who is very cogniscent of my internal cultural mixtures and my idea of a versatile representation of just some of those aspects. It is also a very literal take on what most of us deal with as humans, being the need to earn a living and put food on ours and our families’ plates, but they want to do that doing what we love most and are most passionate about in life. Since the release of the Two Roads EP in April however, the Contract Thursday series is really a testament to exactly that, namely the ability to shapeshift with culture and the times we live in, and be a guide or timestamp, as I believe most of the greatest artists of all time were to their eras, for people to look back on in the future as to where we were as a community, as a society, and as a culture at this point.

What’s on your bucket list to accomplish as an entertainer?

I want to headline a music festival of my own in my home country but on the magnitude of those, I have personally attended in the U.S, if not bigger! I also want nothing more than to work with Kanye West

Will you be finishing out 2017 on the road or what’s on your horizon for 2018?

I, unfortunately, cannot be on the road as I would like to be right now because of my commitments to law school, but I am working on a project I have been very excited about for a very long time, and hoping to release that in the very near future after part 2 of the Contract Thursday’s series is complete! There will be some hints as to the concepts of the following project in the series also!

The Hype Magazine wants to know: What’s been your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?! Or “WTF?!” moment thus far in your career?

The craziest thing I’ve seen is two kids at a show trying to have sex on the barrier right in front of stage in the middle of a packed crowd while I was performing *crying emoji* and of course, it failed miserably, but I’m glad my music could be the soundtrack to their failure.
