Queens MC Eddie James talks Dedicated to Woodside

A proud product of Queens, New York City, Eddie James began writing his own music and performing in venues around the city as a teenager. His musical endeavors were postponed due to life pressures and periods of incarceration.

James’ musical hiatus ended in late 2013,  when he was introduced to Mansion Records. Awed by Eddie’s vocals and the stories in his music, Mansion Records provided him with studio time where he wrote and recorded 10 original soul/hip hop songs. Five of these songs are featured on his latest project, Dedicated to Woodside, which tells the story of his life in the Woodside housing projects, on the streets of NYC and his time in jail.

As a teenager, you began writing your own music. What attracted you to music?

Hip hop music became a major source of male role model mentoring for me.

Who are your musical influences?

I have been listening to hip hop all my life so there are many influences. Jadakiss is a particular favorite.

In touring and performances, have you shared the stage or opened for anyone? If so, who?

Perhaps the most interesting show I did was at the Apollo a few years back. That night I was supported by the Impact Theater Group who are an amazing group of young [Harlemites] led by the well known professor, writer, movie director and activist, Jamal Joseph.

Describe your sound, how do you define it?

My Dedicated to Woodside EP has a retro early 90’s vibe to it – think Nas & Illmatic.

Tell us about your EP. What to expect?

Most of the songs on Dedicated to Woodside were written when I was incarcerated and reflect both the frustration and yearnings you feel in that situation.

For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you as an artist?

“Streets” is probably the most widely heard track. It is in the movie Chapter & Verse which was released in February and is now on Amazon [and] Netflix.

What is New York’s role now in music?

New York is certainly a tough place to build a following. I have always wanted to spend some time in Atlanta and see how I would go on the live circuit there.

What do you want fans to get from your music?

I just want them to hear me and enjoy.

What’s next for you? Any new projects?

I was blown away when I learned recently that my music is being played in over 50 countries. I just need to get some more music out there.
