The Waterboys latest release includes a nod to Hip Hop sonics

Ahead of The Waterboys new double album Out Of All This Blue they dropped two amazing new videos for key album tracks ahead of the September 8 release via BMG. Both joints have a salute to Hip Hop rhythm and influence, quite magically melded with funk, pop, and some neo-everything influences. These cats are a dope discovery for me and if you are into sonic nuances and adventure, mesmerizing time intervals that make you hold your breath to see what’s coming…Out Of All This Blue is gonna be a full ride with a challenge to not hit the repeat button for the entire album ~ JD

Here’s the official line on The Waterboys latest release

If The Answer Is Yeah is followed by Payo Payo Chin (“Good Morning Darling” in Japanese), which is the current single. When watched together, Payo Payo Chin and If The Answer Is Yeah trace the story of the leading man (played by Clive Russell) meeting and pursuing the woman of his dreams. You can watch both videos below.

Produced by Mike Scott and recorded in Dublin and Tokyo, Out Of All This Blue is available on digital, double CD, and double LP formats, plus deluxe triple CD and LP packages, which include bonus tracks.

Out Of All This Blue is The Waterboys’ most exploratory recording yet, comprising 23 songs with Mike Scott’s trademark sharp lyrics set to pop music with echoes of classic R&B, country, soul and funk, underpinned by modern hip-hop production values and rhythms. String & brass sections were arranged and conducted by Trey Pollard of The Spacebomb Collective.

Of the record, Mike Scott explains: “Out Of All This Blue is 2/3 love and romance, and 1/3 stories and observations. I knew from the beginning I wanted to make a double album, and lucky for me – and I hope the listener – the songs just kept coming, and in pop colors.”

Back Story

Ever since Mike Scott first brought The Waterboys to public attention their career has been marked by storied departures. Staking out bold, new territory with fresh approaches and inspirational collaborators has been the defining factor of Scott’s creative flow. Now Out Of All This Blue, The Waterboys’ 12th and first double album is maybe the most brilliantly daring and accomplished reinvention of The Waterboys to date.

Here are love songs as impassioned and unbridled as any in Scott’s canon: the sassy philosophical swing of Do We Choose Who We Love, the urgent Morning Came Too Soon, the unabashed fanfare of Love Walks In. On the incident-filled street symphony New York, I Love You and the anthemic keynote Nashville, Tennessee romantic attachment is to place rather than partner. Elsewhere self-made myths (the rambunctious, careering Connemara Fox), living legends (Mister Charisma), pumped up egomaniacs (Monument) and grotesque rock’n’roll lore (The Hammerhead Bar) illuminate an album that’s kaleidoscopic in scope, rich in character and location, teeming with musical and lyrical detail.

Mike and fellow travellers, fiddler Steve Wickham, Muscle Shoals bass legend David Hood and Deep South keyboard wizard Brother Paul, play like demons on a mission. But it’s Scott’s use of hip hop recording techniques – drum loops, samples and found sounds that ground the songs’ soulful awakenings – that gives the album a particularly thrilling momentum. Refusing to be cowed by past achievements Scott’s determination to forge new ground is preeminent. “I always wanted to be better than anyone else,” he admits. “Cohen and Dylan may be above me in the tower of song but from my own generation I’ll take any of them on. Let them beat this.”
