Who is Saints and Sinners Actress Jasmine Burke?
Jasmine Burke is an award winning American Filmmaker & Actor. Jasmine studied at Kennesaw State University on full scholarship. Won her first achievement in filmmaking at the 2010 Women in Film & Television Film Festival for a short she wrote, executive produced, directed and stared in entitled “Lucky Lotto”. She continues writing & producing content with a feature in development at Universal.
Jasmine’s ambitious nature has defined her since she was a child. Starting her first business at the age of 11 when entrusted with a quarter candy machine given to her by her step-father. Instead of using the key to eat candy at her leisure, she negotiated a deal with a local nail shop owner to house the machine in the shop. Pocketing the profit. The joy of taking a little pressure off of her hard working Mom by being able to treat herself to a new out fit, pair of shoes or school supplies here and there felt empowering. That same thrill being a thinker and creator propels Jasmine today.
When Jasmine decided to step out on faith, leaving her theatre roots to pursue a career in Film and Television she did so with out a agent, manager, nor any industry relationships. With fortitude she found her way into Rueben Cannon’s office. Booking her first Guest Star role on Tyler Perry’s “Meet The Browns”. Since, Jasmine’s IMDB has grown significantly with stand out roles in box office #1’s and television mega hits.
With #blacktwitter hailing Jasmine the break out star of Bounce TV’s hit drama Saints & Sinners and being hand picked by Lee Daniels to recur in Fox’s Star, Jasmine Burke inspires her 20k social media followers through her shared journey that hard work pays off.
When not in front of the camera acting or behind it creating Jasmine speaks and mentors youth throughout the same national organizations that she was a part of as child such as Girls Inc., Boys & Girls Club of America and Goodwill to name a few.
The Hype Magazine got some time with Jasmine to learn more about this rising thespian star!
As you see yourself, who is Jasmine Burke?
Jasmine Burke is a creator. I have a gift for figuring things out, putting pieces together, building something from scratch. It’s a lot of work but I get pleasure from pushing through and seeing the completed project.
What brought you to the entertainment industry specifically?
I grew up in musical theatre. Performing in plays since kindergarten. I wasn’t pushed to do it, I naturally gravitated towards it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s in my DNA.
What and/or who influenced the acting style of which you bring to the screen?
The old school Hollywood acting style influences my style of performing. I grew up loving black and white movies, and I still do.
What’s happened in your career that makes you feel this is the industry for you?
Entertainment is the business for me because I have the talent and determination. I could do something else and succeed but entertainment allows me the fullest range to live out my gifts,
What was the biggest obstacle in getting to your current career phase?
My biggest obstacle has been myself. Conquering self.
What do you want people to get from your acting?
I want people to see the human in all of my characters. Have empathy no matter the characters set of life choices. I hope my performances have that effect on people.
Tell us about what it is like to be a part of “Saints and Sinners“…
Saints and Sinners is a wonderful series. I’m grateful to be apart of it. I get to play a dynamic character, Dr. Christie Johnson, and our fans are the absolute best.
Any new projects in the works?
New projects; music is on the way. I’m finishing up a hit with J.Henry entitled “Voodoo Love”. I’m releasing a book, “Jasmine Burke’s Professional Actors Guide Work Your Tape”. And returning to Season 3 of Saints and Sinners.
What do you feel has been your greatest life achievement so far?
My greatest life achievement so far is not giving up on myself. I pray that will always be an achievement.
If you could work along side of or collaborate with one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I’d like to collab with Oprah Winfrey on a project for OWN.
Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” moment…
Where they do that at moment for me would be women chasing men. It’s out of control these days. Then men wonder why women aren’t as soft. They gotta chase you, put food on the table, raise the babies, walk the dog, take the trash out while being cute, delicate and demure. Help a sista out fellas!
