The Hype Magazine: 9:19 Music Interview

The Hype Magazine sits down with King Graint and Gunny H of 9:19 Music Group. Check out their new single “Understand”.

You’ve been co-producing for some top dogs. Everyone from Kxng Crooked to Royce Da 5’9 to 22 Savage to Rick Rubin’s artist Kevin Pollari. Has working with major artists taught you more about yourself as a producer?

KG: It was pretty dope to get the chance to work with them. It really added a new level of confidence for me.

Who else do you see yourself producing songs for? Who do you want to collaborate with?

KG: I’m going to be 100% honest right now. At the moment, all I’m focused on is producing for 9:19 and building up the company. If something comes around I’ll jump on the opportunity.

We see you doing big things, King Graint. What’s it like seeing your name in places like TMZ and Billboard?

KG: It’s legit. The first time it happened it kinda felt like I was dreaming [laughs].

“Kylie’s Daddy” with 22 Savage aka Funny Mike, Iliana Eve and Ziggy was a song that went viral and trended. Talk about that experience.

KG: That was the first song I produced for Iliana. It was crazy how all of a sudden I woke up and the the song was everywhere. People I knew from back home told me they saw it on the TV show TMZ. The coolest part of that whole thing was building the relationship with Iliana. I have production on 8 of the songs on her new project 15: The Sins of A Father Playlist.

At what point did you decide that you wanted to become a producer? What are the biggest challenges you face as a producer?

KG: It was around 2010. My friend Dephree showed me his first mixtape. While I was listening I was like hang on a second, I know I could make beats just like that if not better. That mixtape inspired me to start producing. The biggest challenge for me as a producer is finding inspiration.

How does the chemistry between you (the producer) and the artist effect a song/project?

KG: If the chemistry and vibes are flowing there is no stopping us. It comes natural.

Do you always plan sessions ahead of time or do you go spur of the moment when you get in your zone?

KG: Both, it really depends. I strike when the inspiration is there. I just produced all the beats for Jenvoix debut album in my kitchen [laughs].

You started your company 9:19 Music Group. What motivated you to start it?

KG: When I first started producing it always felt like a dream. I’m not exactly sure why but now it’s 9:19 Music Group vs Everyone… so no one is safe.

Besides producing music, are there other goals/passions that you have?

KG: I would love to start a non-profit to help people struggling with addiction to find their passions in life with art or whatever it might be and help them get sober and achieve their goals.

Gunny H Questions:

Nice name, Gunny H. How did you come up with it?

GH: It’s comes from my hostile environment growing up. Gunny came from my aggressive delivery with life and music. H stands for hostage because I was held by the streets as one.

Where are you from and how has your environment inspired you as an artist?

GH: I’m from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was born in North Philly and was raised in the Frankford area. My neighborhood was wild but between sports and music I had outlets. Streets made my substance authentic and realistic.

How do you know when it’s time to hit the studio? Is it always a certain time like late night or do you go when you have a creative itch?

GH: Anytime is a great time to hit the studio. I’m always on go day or night. I create at a rapid rate and I get vibes soon as I touch production.

At what point in you life did you decide that you wanted to do music?

GH: Well at 4 years old my mother brought me a Playskool Radio. I then began to listen to rap automatically. I was raised in a household of music, so it’s in my DNA. My Grandfather was a musician so it came naturally later on in life.

What’s it like working with King Graint and 9:19 Music Group?

GH: It’s a dream come true. We are a family and King is my brother. It’s a blessing to have him in my corner as well as the squad. It’s amazing…

What is your favorite song you have done so far and why?

GH: The crazy thing is all my music is highly dope [laughs]. I would have to say “Understand” is my favorite song at the moment. It’s like super turnt trap music. The song has that dark feel but a real hype vibe to it.

Who do you see yourself collaborating with?

GH: I want to collaborate with everyone willing to work. I want to be exclusive and fresh to the industry. I’m ready to change the game with hot material and motivate the future artists.

What projects are you currently working on now?

GH: I just dropped a tape independently in October called Tha Nice World of Gunny H which is my 4th installment produced by DNice the Beat Man. 919 Music Group is the future. We have so many big things coming up. Trust.

Talk about your song on the radio right now.

GH: “Understand” featuring Plat produced by King Graint is a smash hit trap turn up gutter vibes. Makes you want to get up and dance and go get that bag. King killed the production and I layed the vocals and the rest is history. When it made the radio I was so hype, out of breath, the best feeling in my life. To say I finally did it. Nothing but God. Anything is possible. It’s on fire!
