OverDoz Takes Us Back to 2008

The eclectic sounds of California misfits OverDoz @overdoz produced studio album 2008.  The highlights of the album include intro track “Kush and Red Wine,” “District,” and “F*ck Yo DJ” featuring Asap Ferg.  The lyrical stylings of the Crenshaw District collective are supported by RCA Records and Polo Ground Recordings.  The crew contains Kent Jamz, Joon, P, and comedian Cream.  Calmatic directed the visual for “District” in which they go on a impromptu crime spree. After four mix-tape releases OverDoz releases their booming full-length debut produced by heavyweights Pharell, Hit-Boy, THC, and 1500.  Emerging from the same neighborhood as N.W.A. the group has more of a, Decatur legends, Outkast or South Central visionaries the Pharcyde wave of rap.

The group is applying pressure to the West Coast rap culture.  The innovative production ranges from high energy to melodic soulful instrumentals.   “Last Kiss” produced by Skateboard P, easily competes with any 90’s De La Soul record while sampling Funkadelic’s, “One Nation Under a Groove.”  Overdoz changes the dynamic of inner-city Los Angeles.  Honoring the tradition of G-Funk, a genre popularized by Dr, Dre but credited to Lawhouse Production, which used Funk samples from artist George Clinton, Zapp, and Boosie Collins and emerged in the late eighties.  The variation is a calmer, smoother form of Cali rap.  The hippy Afro-centricity is evident in the views of these ghetto prophets.  The unfiltered lyrical content includes sex, drugs, and community violence amidst a background of sunny hip hop.  The pulse of the new wave of concepts make this the most cohesive group album in the genre.

Although they walk through the jungle as brothers, they have formed an intimate tribe.  Yet still the ominous fact is, after moving under the radar for slightly under a decade, these emcees now have the gusto to put a dent in current hip hop culture and redefine their quest for fame.
