The Hype Magazine Interviews Fabian Secon

Emerging UK artist/producer Fabian Secon has teamed up with fellow UK stars Young T & Bugsey (StormzyBelly SquadDa Beatfreakz) for new track “Haze”, a progressive record with its own sound unlike anything else on the airwaves currently. The track was written and produced by Fabian Secon alongside Lucas Secon, Chucks and Mintman, with additional lyrics by Young T & Bugsey.

Speaking on the collaboration, Fabian says, “Bugsey and I connected online many months ago and had a mutual admiration for each other’s music, so a collaboration was a natural progression. It was interesting as we have very different styles but came together to create something very original with an alternative folk-trap vibe. It has a strong sense of euphoria and talks about the loyalty and protection you experience with a loved one.”

“Haze” aims to continue the momentum Fabian has created over the last few months with a string of successful and critically acclaimed releases that have helped establish a growing fan base for the unsigned artist, bolstered by word of mouth and support from the likes of MTVdynmkPigeons & PlanesComplexLink Up TV, HHS1987, Thisis50 and more. Previous release “Defeated” has already achieved over 70,000 streams on SoundCloud since being released only a few weeks ago, pushing Fabian past half a million SoundCloud streams in total.

The Hype Magazine got Fabian to weigh in from across the “Big Pond” on his current project and his outlook for 2018

From the outside looking in, who is Fabian Secon?

I’m a unique artist who always aspires to make the best music possible. I’m not an r&b singer, I’m just me. One hundred percent one of the most talented artists in the UK.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

Music is in the blood. My grandad wrote for artists such as Nat King Cole & my dad is a successful music producer & songwriter. I guess it was inevitable I’d eventually end up doing music, even though it wasn’t until two years ago that I really started.

What do you want people to get from your music?

Nearly all of my songs have real meaning and emotion behind it, so I like to make music that you can feel inside whether it’s about love, heart break, your frustrations or sadness. Sonically I want people to think what they are hearing is fresh and be able to vibe to it in any way they want. Some people will take messages away from the songs and some will just zone out.

Tell us about your current project.

I’m just releasing track after track for now. I want to a release something every month. I don’t have an EP or mixtape in the works at the moment but that could change.

Your music is a cross between alternative R&B and hip-hop…how did you go about developing this sound? Who are you influenced by?

Growing up I listened to artists like Nelly, Ed Sheeran, Eminem, 50 Cent, Giggs, Neyo, Bones, Coldplay and many more. I guess I’ve taken influences from everything I’ve ever listened to or there may have been particular songs I vividly remember that stuck with me.

Tell us a bit about your work and passions OUTSIDE of music…

Playing football for fun and Superhero movies. Of course spending time with my loved ones. I always enjoy being in Copenhagen too as I’m Danish and the city is the best. Nothing too crazy really.

The Official Line

Prior to this Fabian released the soulful “Teenage Love” (via DMR/Warners), which was co-produced by frequent collaborator 5ive Beatz (NinesStormzyRay BLKKrept & KonanAbra Cadabra) and soared straight into the top 3 of US music site DJBooth’sIndependent Hip-Hop/R&B Chart and into the top 100 on US platform Audiomack in just 3 days. Fabian already joined forces with 5ive Beatz earlier this year for joint EP Until We Meet Again as well as UK R&B singer Geovarn for “Tell Me”, and there are more collaborations in the vault with the likes of NygeAJ Tracey and Tayá, further solidifying his place at the forefront of the UK’s revitalised urban music scene.

Fabian’s rise has been swift and impressive, given it was only last year when he dropped his debut EP, Don’t Disturb, which received a great reception and paved the way for support from a wealth of radio stations and industry tastemakers, such as Jamz Supernova and DJ Target at BBC Radio 1Xtra, where EP single “Sensei” was given BBC Introducing Single Of The Week honours by MistaJam. The accompanying video went on to accumulate 150,000 streams on Fabian’s VEVO channel—which has attracted a big audience for all of his visuals released so far. Fabian has also had support from Capital FM and Capital XTRA for “Gold Plated” and was selected by Spotify earlier this year to feature in several of their highly sought-after playlists with “Lust” and “Rockstar”.

With a fan base clearly on board and online buzz growing daily, his next pursuit is the live circuit. Having already performed at UK venues Jazz Cafe, Hoxton Bar & Grill and Barfly among others, Fabian will be playing at London’s Ruby Blue on November 9th, as well as venturing out overseas. He recently performed at Vega in Copenhagen and has an upcoming show in Paris, with more dates to be announced soon.
