The Hype Magazine Interviews Black Steve

We got the chance to exclusively interview Black Steve, who is one of Louisville’s hottest, rising rap stars under the guidance of industry veteran Monique Spratt. He’s very cool…get to know him like we did- check out the interview below.

What’s the origin of the name Black Steve?

Well my name is Steve and I’m chocolate, so since I was a pup everybody just called me Black Steve.

What made you want to become a rap artist?

To be honest, I just wanted something else to believe in other than the streets. Most of my close homies that I grew up with just started getting killed and going in and out of jail. I was in and out of jail too. That’s where I really polished up for real. But to make a long story short, I just love the feeling when I make music.

What’s it like growing up in Louisville, Kentucky?

It’s challenging for the most part because everybody hates on everybody. I guess it’s just like any other city. It’s all about what you make it for real. It ain’t like it was when I was growing up I can tell you that.

Can you tell us about your first single “Game Gossip”?

It’s just about my life top to bottom…from even just giving game to the lil young homies. Just letting them know my situations…the good and the bad. The beat alone just spoke to me; it took me back and put me in my zone and the real shit just started pouring out GAME GOSSIP!

What do you think of Louisville’s Bryson Tiller? Any game gossip you’ve heard about him around the way?

I rocks with Bryson. We’re from the same hood but never ran together or nothing. He’s done some good in the community but you know the people always find a way to fuck shit up. I respect his grind and that he came from nothing and made it out. Blessed.

What are your thoughts on Jack Harlow? Do you think he will pop?

Jack’s poppin! What’s not to like about a white boy with black swag. I feel like he’s gonna pop. It will be good for the city!

Switching up, what inspires you when you pick up a pen to write lyrics?

The beat inspires me. Just the sound of it and all the lil different instruments. I like for the beat to talk to me and the words just flow out. It’s kind of unexplainable for real. It’s an art.

And do you write lyrics on actual paper or on phone? What’s your writing process?

Well when I first started, I was writing on paper but the more advanced I got and the more I was moving around, I just started using the “Notes” app in my iPhone and writing there. It’s easier to me.

Do you ever get writer’s block? If so, what do you do to get back in the groove?

I think every artist gets it. I just try to get in a place where I’ve created memories and it will come back to me or I might be stuck on a bar and my homie will throw me a couple words and I would feed off that.

How has your environment had an impact on your music?

It has a big impact. All my music is based off things that I experienced first hand. So that allows me to get more detailed about certain things and that’s what makes the music great.

What is your favorite part of performing live?

Having control over the crowd and seeing them rocking with my music. I like having control, so when I can control a whole crowd to the music that I wrote and created…. that’s a blessing ya feel me.

What message do you wish to convey as an artist?

I just want to take my music all around the world and touch people like myself who come from where I came from.

Have you ever been compared to another artist? If so, who?

I mean I’ve been put in the category of Boosie due to the stories I tell and put together.

Who would you like to collaborate with both locally and nationally?

I fucks with Rick Ross, Yo Gotti, Gucci Mane…you know the big homies in the game who I can learn a lot from.

What are you working on at this moment?

Just building my brand as an artist. Going from state to state meeting up with the right people so I can get my music where it needs to be. I got new visuals about to drop for Game Gossip 2 and I’m in the writing process of Game Gossip 3. THE LEVEL UP!

Besides music, do you have any other hobbies/passions?

Shit to be honest I want my own clothing company because I’m mad fly. I want my own liquor brand too. I eventually want to get into acting because I know how to play roles when it’s time. I have so many things that I want to do but it’s gonna all start with the music!
