The Flames left wing Johnny Gaudreau put on an impressive show in front of family and friends of New Jersey Thursday night against the Devils. Gaudreau had a goal and an assist as Calgary skated to a 3-2 triumph over the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey in front of 13,085. “It’s special of having people close to me get the chance to watch me play. It’s always a bunch of fun playing in front of them. I have a lot of family and acquaintances here, so it’s great to come back to the east coast. We don’t get to play here much, don’t get to see family much, so when I do play in front of them, you try to make the most of it.Calgary Johnny Gaudreau said.

After 0-0 first period, center Sean Monahan smoked the puck away from a rebound past Devils goalie Keith Kinkaid at 4:16 of the second. Kinkaid made the initial save on a slap shot by Dougie Hamilton, but the puck bounced off his pad and Monahan slapped it in for the easy finish.
After Devils Taylor Hall tied things up which was his 20th goal of the season, the battle for the rebound and slapped one past David Rittich at 7:23 in the second, Gaudreau took a breakaway pass from Micheal Ferland and backhanded a shot through goalie Keith Kinkaid’s legs at 14:33.

In his ninth career game against the Devils, Gaudreau scored his first goal against his home city.
“It’s a big win for us, especially where we’re at in the standings right now,” said Gaudreau. The Jersey kid has put up three goals and four assists in his final four outings.
Sean Monahan struck again at 18:05, capitalizing off a fictitious rebound. His initial shot from the left side hit the tip of the crossbar and bounced up into the air. Monahan circled back and polished off with a quick shot.

New Jersey got within a goal, losing 3-2 in the third period, again scoring at the 7:23 marker. Center Pavel Zacha took a Brian Boyle pass in front of the crease on a force play, and he backhanded a shot for a score that brought the crowd to their feet.“Some good plays out there and we’re moving the puck around, who recorded his second straight game-winning marker to give him 10 such goals this season, which leads the NHL. Luckily enough I got rewarded a couple times.” Calgary Sean Monahan said.

Goalie David Rittich made 30 saves to improve his record this season to 5-1-2.

This was Calgary third straight victory, the Flames (28-18-8) moved back into third place in the Pacific Division past the idle Los Angeles Kings (29-19-5) and into a playoff contention.

Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist for the Devils (27-18-8), to extend his point-scoring streak to a career-high 12 games. Pavel Zacha also scored, while Keith Kinkaid finished with 22 saves.

The Flames outshot the Devils 12-8 in the opening frame but weren’t able to beat Kinkaid, who denied rookie forward Ryan Lomberg from scoring his first NHL goal in just his second game with six minutes to play before the first break.

“I think we were a little too cautious in the third with our game. We let our game slip and they kind of kept pushing us right to the very end.” Calgary coach Glen Gulutzan said.
