Case+Drift Founder Casey Bagby On Creating Stylish, Functional & Well-Made Travel Accessories

Founded by Casey Bagby, Case+Drift is responsible for a line of accessories that will benefit all kinds of travels. Beyond looking great, the bags, towels, and pouches of Case+Drift are made to last and keep functionality in made. As noted by Bagby herself within our Q&A for The Hype Magazine, the Case+Drift concept itself came from the need to create products that aided her international travels. More on Bagby and her rising Case+Drift brand — as already covered in Forbes, Jacksonville Magazine, Upscale, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette — can be found online at www.caseanddrift.com.

Where did the Case+Drift brand name come from? The “Case” comes from the name Casey, yes?

Casey Bagby: It’s kind of a double meaning, my name is Casey, but it’s also about “casing” or “packing” before your start the drifting part! All my products make packing/traveling a little easier.

Before starting Case+Drift, what were you up to career-wise? Had you been traveling often?

Casey Bagby: I was living in Australia when I decided to start the brand. I was working in marketing at the time and have basically done some form of that since college. The knowledge has been a big help starting my own business as you can imagine. It’s all about the Instagram! The whole brand was inspired by all the traveling I was doing while living over there, Australian culture really supports travel and a more work-to-live lifestyle which is one of the things I loved most about it.

I was traveling with a lighter Turkish towel at the time that I would have liked to be more versatile, colorful, etc. So I designed my own to meet those needs. I was using grocery bags to store my wet clothes, shoes etc. while traveling, so I created the Dry Bag and Drift Pouch to meet those needs as well. All the products are designed from first-hand experience of what a traveler needs, all-purpose items that make life a little easier while on the road.

Which was the first item you conceptualized?

Casey Bagby: The Ballina Towel — I was living in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia at the time, which is where the name comes from! The concept was to use a traditional Turkish as inspiration but make it even more versatile. I can honestly say I use it for everything, on trips and at home. Towel, plane blanket, scarf, throw blanket, wrap, I have gifted it as a baby blanket even!

Do you have a favorite of the Case+Drift products offered?

Casey Bagby: I would have to go with the Ballina because its the OG. (laughs) The product that started it all and the most sentimental. I’ll never forget sitting at my kitchen table in Ballina showing my Aussie roommates designs, colors and concepts in the beginning months. It was so fun and exciting. And then taking the samples with me to Thailand, Bali, New Zealand to test them out and having people compliment me on them in a pub or something. It was just a really memorable time for me.

Aloha, Friday. ??⠀ #caseanddrift #driftfreely

People have referred to your brand as making “hobo-chic” products. Is that a description you enjoy?

Casey Bagby: Really? Did not know that. (laughs) I mean I think these products work for vagabonds and professionals and that’s the way I wanted it. You don’t have to be a 20-something with the travel bug like I was to use them. You can be a frequent corporate traveler and just want stylish, all-purpose travel accessories… We’ve got you covered either way.

What is coming up for Case+Drift in the coming months? Are new products in development? Any partnerships or tie-ins?

Casey Bagby: We have a lot of exciting things to come. We have a new towel coming out that’s unique to the typical round terry towel that I am pretty excited about. Don’t want to say too much, but keep an eye out for it! With all of our products, we promise it to offer many uses and be more compact to make it easily transition from household use to travel staple.

Is there something you wish more people knew about your brand?

Casey Bagby: I guess that it was started at a dining room table in Australia by a girl who really didn’t know where her life was going at that time. I moved overseas on a holiday-working visa to shake life up a bit, “find myself” if you will and getting out of my comfort zone gave me the confidence to create something of my own that was truly inspired by my own life experiences. You know why I wanted my towels to be thicker? Because I have been stuck in an airport in Malaysia, alone, on my way to Thailand to meet friends, and my original Turkish towel was too thin to keep me warm while I tried to take an airport nap. (laughs) I was like, “Man, we gotta make these things thicker because the struggle is real right now.”

Getting to the point, doing something out of the norm — like randomly moving across the planet or starting your own business and putting your ideas out there for judgment — is super-scary. But anyone can do it.

When not busy with Case+Drift, how do you like to spend your free time?

Casey Bagby: Case+Drift certainly takes up a lot of time, but I am not complaining. Planning trips is part of the fun too! But outside of that, you can find me working on my house. My boyfriend and I enjoy being out on the boat. I like to cook. Happy hour with my girlfriends is one of my favorite hobbies. I try my best to work out regularly. I am a huge animal person, I have two dogs and a cat…

As a music-related publication, I must ask: What was the last concert you attended for fun?

Casey Bagby: (laughs) It was Eric Church, the country singer. This girl loves her country music!

Finally, Casey, any last words for the kids?

Casey Bagby: It’s a big big world, get out there and see it!
