Multi-Platinum Recording Artist 21 Savage Continues Mission to Teach Kids About Financial Literacy With Powerful Mic.Com Documentary Filmed In His Hometown
Yesterday, multi-platinum recording artist 21 Savage, who launched his “21 Savage Bank Account Campaign,” released a powerful documentary on Mic.com in the neighborhood he grew up in with a recipient of the $1K prize Savage promised kids earlier this year in partnership with Get Schooled.
Mic traveled to Atlanta to film the moment Savage and Bill Pongnon, a high school senior football player from Dekalb County who submitted a letter explaining why the $1K would benefit him, interacted for the first time. The two met in front of the home Savage grew up in, played a game of catch, and had a conversation about the importance of youth in low-income neighborhoods having financial literacy tools.
Earlier this year, Savage successfully launched the national “21 Savage Bank Account” financial literacy campaign in partnership with non-profit educational organization Get Schooled, which promised 21 teenagers $1K to start their own bank accounts and take on financial literacy. This Mic.com piece further exemplifies the importance for youth to learn how to manage money and potentially break the cycle of poverty.
On Sunday night, Savage and Post Malone won “Song of the Year” at the MTV VMA’s and performed “rockstar,” which broke an Apple Music record with 25 million plays, landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and is 7x RIAA-certified Platinum.
