Hip hop pioneer and producer DJ Premier and Brooklyn MC Casanova revealed their music video for newest single “WUT U SAID?” directed by legendary hip-hop photographer Daniel Hastings. Best described as a classic rap record throwback to NY in the 90s, the single dropped  via Payday Records with a premiere on Complex.

For this visual, Payday called upon famed photographer Hastings to step back into the creative spotlight reigniting the vision of the way hip-hop was portrayed in the 90s as seen in the video. Having been a longtime collaborator with Premier and Payday, this visual is seen as a return to Payday’s roots, bringing back into the fold the iconic 1990s street and gritty feel. Hastings shot numerous iconic Gang Starr images and album covers in the 90s and 2000s, including the covers for Mass Appeal and Hard To Earn, as well as covers for Jeru The Damaja and Group Home on Payday.
About the video

I went back to my 90’s style of shooting, edgy and raw,” said Hastings. “The fans are going to go nuts when they see this video because I captured the soul of the song and put it into a visual composition, it has that Danny Hastings signature all over.

Danny Hastings came up with the concept of Casanova being tied up and he eventually breaks himself free and then ties up the enemy as a revenge,” said Premiere. “Cas wasn’t with being tied up (LOL) so we had to work around it.  We were supposed to shoot this Video two-months ago but my Dad passed. Cas has a dope demeanor in front of a camera, on stage and in person; so the video accompanied the song very effectively.

The video opens with Premier and Casanova conversing in a dark warehouse in NYC, setting the tone for what’s to come. The aggressive lyrics are heightened through unrestrained and fierce frames showing Casanova holding a gun, overpowering a guy he’s keeping hostage and holding a ferocious dog on a chain. The combination of quick cutting between Preem and Cas, an unforgiving gritty atmosphere, and impassioned visuals forcibly grabs attention from start to finish.
All that we can say about this joint is that Preemo hasn’t missed a beat and Cassanova matched the production in every way which is to say…VICIOUS!!!  ~ #Hype
