Healthy Wine that Tastes Good? Thanks to Ultra-Marathoner Dean Karnazes, Yes!

Ultra-Marathoner Dean Karnazes

Dean Karnazes, who once ran 50 marathons, in all 50 US states, in 50 consecutive days has collaborated and created a healthy wine for both athletes and those just seeking a clean wine. Here’s the kicker, they’re actually delicious. They’re called Marathon Wines and are made in collaboration in Nu-Greek Wines, who also create Georgós Greek Wine.

Karnazes said of the collaboration, “I am honored to be part of the team bringing you Marathon Super-Premium Greek Wines. As a proud Greek and a marathon runner, these wines speak to me. They are lively and filled with vigor, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy them as much as I do.”

But why a wine? Is alcohol even conducive to health? “Running can be painful,” Karnazes often says, and as part of his recovery process, he follows the same practice of Greek athletes by enjoying wine for rest and relaxation after exercise.

The ancient Greek philosopher and physician Hippocrates once noted, “Wine is an appropriate article for mankind, both for the healthy body and for the ailing man.”  Karnazes enjoys wine after a long run; for him wine works much better than ibuprofen. “Wine loosens the muscles and invigorates the spirit,” Karnazes says, “but the quality of the wine is very important. Marathon wines are crafted with lower sulfites and contain no additives. These things matter, especially to an athlete.”

Currently Marathon comes in two varietals. “Athena’s Vineyard” is bright and refreshing, almost effervescent on the tongue. It is composed 100% from Greece’s most prized Assyrtiko (ah-SEER-tee-koe) grapes, and is exceptionally clean and will refresh your palate and your spirit – even after a long run. This Super-Premium Greek wine, inspired by Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, is a 2017 vintage similar to a dry Sauvignon blanc, and follows the high standards of all NU-Greek Wines. The other Marathon varietal, “Nike’s Vineyard” gets its name from Nike, the Goddess of Victory, and is also a 2017 vintage. It is a delicious and delicate dry rosé blend made entirely from indigenous, sustainably grown premium Greek grapes. “Nike’s Vineyard” is perfectly balanced, dry, refreshing and lively on the palate. “It has a much bounce as Dean’s racing strides,” Winemaker Robert Rex says, “His athleticism inspired this exquisite rosé.”

Both wines will follow the mission of NU-Greek Wines to create the healthiest and most flavorful wine possible. In order to accomplish this, the grapes themselves are 100% non-GMO, hand-picked and triple hand sorted in Greece. The wine is then transported in sealed containers to the Sonoma Valley to be perfected and bottled on the premises of Deerfield Ranch Winery. This meticulous but worthwhile process ultimately results in a cleaner tasting wine with low sulfites and no additives – making Marathon Wines healthier and with high-quality flavors that athletes and wine lovers can appreciate.
