Airways Release Politically Conscious New Single

Peterborough-based quartet Airways have released Alien, the hotly anticipated first single to be taken from their upcoming new studio EP, which is yet to be announced. Alien – a true fan favorite – is an upbeat slice of slick indie rock-meets-ska which finds the band firing on all cylinders. Produced by Nothing But Thieves’ Dom Craik, Alien finds Airways at their catchiest and most frenetic.

The song serves as an urgent plea by an outsider to be allowed into a new place, with its lyrical origins stemming from the arduous struggle to obtain a Visa for an American tour the band had to call off. Frontman Jake Daniels elaborates: “We were due to play in the US and Trump’s tighter border control meant getting a visa wasn’t as easy as before. The trip had to be cancelled at the last minute. We were furious, and it made us think about being labeled as ‘undesirable’ in a variety of situations.

Alien marks the band’s first new music since 2017’s Starting to Spin EP, a five-track release which thrust them into the indie spotlight, spawning popular singles One Foot and Reckless Tongue. To date, both singles have amassed nearly 6 million streams on Spotify alone.

Airways consists of Jake Daniels (vocals/guitar), Alexander Ruggiero (guitar), Jamie Reynolds (bass) and Brian Moroney (drums). Having formed when the Peterborough-based Daniels met Moroney in 2015 on a songwriting trip to Los Angeles, Airways subsequently recruited Daniels’ lifelong friend Ruggiero and Birmingham-based Reynolds. In the three years since forming, Airways have toured with the likes of Nothing But Thieves, The Hunna and Sunset Sons whilst also appearing at festivals across Europe and the UK such as Reading & Leeds, Mad Cool Festival and Waterpop. Earlier this summer, the band embarked on a successful European tour which saw them perform to packed clubs in Amsterdam, Hamburg and Vienna. A full UK tour is slated for September and is preceded by shows in Paris, Munich and Zurich.
